Upgrade from 150series - satisfaction or regrets

Postby bennyfica on Mon, 19 Feb 2018 2:47 +0000

Hi gang. Of those who have upgraded from 150 series to current model, what have you liked or not liked? Would you recommend the upgrade, and why? I have an '08 V6 SR5 trayback and weighing up spending the cash on doing up - bullbar, suspension and a few bits and pieces, or upgrading and spending the cash on doing up the new one. Will be a trayback auto - can't see the value in the SR5 over an SR for what I want. Cheers.

150 Series is a Landcruiser (Prado). You can’t get a V6 anymore in a Hilux so you’ll be going backwards big time engine wise changing away from what you have. You may ring a 2017 V6 used or demo though.

Ah. Thanks for the edumacation. I see these called 150 series everywhere, so.. Anyway, you don't think the new diesel would be as good as or comparable to the 1gr-fe? I know the old one's not even close (sorry d4d lovers!). I don't know that I'd upgrade to a new one in a petrol with the so-called improvement of modern diesels (or is that all bull?) Would be nice to keep an engine I can fix. I didn't even know they did a petrol in the 8th gen until last week.

120 and 150 series are Landcruisers as far as I know. Haven't heard a Hilux being called that but I don't use Facebook or other such hives of misinformation so that might be why!

Found my 2008-2011 brochure. Gearing on a manual is:

V6:
1st - 4.313
Rev - 4.220
Diff - 3.583

D4D:
1st - 3.830
Rev - 4.220
Diff - 3.583.

Tyres 205R16C or 255/70/15

Yep, it is less commonly referred to as the 150 hilux. You can find evidence on some parts including the old genuine Toyota bulbar.

7th Gen is a more common term for the 2004-2015 models.
I might be wrong.

I just went looking and some websites do call them a 150. Is is real though or is it like the ill informed people who call V2 Monaro a VX or VY, or VG Holden utes VN Commodore utes and it sort of ends up in common language? I’ve owned a 2010 and 2011 and never seen any reference to them as a 150 Series Hilux. Although I just found a review of the 2010 update and they call the prior Hilux (3/05 to 9/09) a 150 Series. Hmmm.

Take a test drive HK, it's the only way to know. Don't trust other people's opinion on engine performance.

The new hilux is a completely different beast to what your used to.

I did a few weeks back. Liked it, wife liked it. Now weighing up spending on extras for a 08 or spending similar for a new one. Plus XY has almost talked me out of it in regards to the 1gr-fe - but I could always get a petrol N80 if I can find one!

definitely 150 series

I still have my '14 hilux, but usually drive new hilux's (rental 4wd's) for work. I have a manual, rentals are all auto.

My favourite thing about the new hilux is that you can fit a 1.5l plastic water bottle in the door bottle holders

I hate the 4wd switch and much prefer a manual transfer case but that's probably not a big deal for most people. The dip stick in them is also a PITA to put back in as it's too flexible so needs to be held part way down to get it in.

I think they're pretty comfortable, the audio screens are a little hit and miss, though at least they don't get blown out by sunlight like the old ones, but the old ones are easier to change out I assume and these days you can get a head unit with a plug to match your vehicle so you can still use the steering wheel controls.

Your '08 is 10 years old.... I reckon you'd be happy with a new one if you upgraded. If you're going to be adding all the bits and pieces, for the money you're putting into it, you may as well be putting it into a new one.

My two cents is go for petrol if you can get a v6

Have you seen how in the Eurozone there are some countries banning diesel vehicles! Could be coming to a place near you.

If you like the vehicle you have, I'd save my money and get the current one renovated.

Note to self... I wish I kept my 80 series 1hdt!

I just checked and sure enough it says 150 SER. No mention of it anywhere in Manufacturer's info, they call it a GGN25.

I looked at Landcruisers and their Series makes sense. What we call 70 Series, 90 Series, 120 Series and 150 Series are actually called J70, J90, J120 and J150, whereas the vehicles just like the Hilux, Vigo etc have different names for different markets eg Bundera, Prado, Landcruiser etc.

BUT the Hilux/Vigo/Trekker/4Runner/Surf and N10-N170, then AN10-AN30 and now AN120 and AN130. SO not sure where Toyota Australia got 150 Series from? The 7th Gen are AN10, AN20 and AN30. If there was to be a 150 Series Hilux it should have been the N150 which was the first facelift of the 1997 6th Gen N140?

I have a diesel, theoretically they have more low end torque? Great for not idling along in traffic, but in an auto it doesn't matter. I have never driven a petrol 4wd, but if you're used to petrol the noise of a diesel might not be something you like.

If I were you I'd test drive a diesel with the windows down, and see how you feel about the added noise, but at the same time also consider what you plan to do with your 4wd, as i think the diesel vs petrol thing in many cases could be a horses for courses argument. For low range 4wding I would say diesel, for general economy I would probably say diesel, for never having to worry about the what day of the week it was when buying fuel diesel wins hands down :D I've paid the exact same amount for fuel the last month i filled up :D

They can't make emission standards retrospective so don't worry about that.

My 2c to add in regards to the above comments:

Diesel noise, took me a long time to get used to it coming from petrol, still not a huge fan of it but at least turning up the radio drowns it somewhat. The vibrations also took months to get used as well especially at 2000 rpm where the steering wheel tingles. I had the choice of getting the V6 or diesel and as I tow a lot I'll say I'm better off with the diesel.

A major bonus however is the stupid petrol price discounting doesn't apply to diesel as mentioned above, I hate it and always have.
I do shop around and try to fill up at a cheaper servo in the area I'm passing through at the time. It goes further on a tank and cost wise per 100km is about the same to run as my old petrol 2.3L Mazda 3 manual give or take the price of petrol that day as mentioned.

BP premium diesel seems to be my pick so far as the past 3 tanks have come from the same servo and is 13c cheaper per litre than my local which is a Shell
13c may not be a fortune but I'm in a business startup currently and doing around a tank per week so every cent helps.

The major thing that bothers me with diesel is the DPF, I've had no issues with it in 14,000km but I'm worried about it playing up out of warranty.
Still they used to say the same thing about catalytic converters in the day.

It appears that the dpf issue is one to keep an eye on.... When warranty runs out its a very expensive consumable for the owner to fork out. Maybe the downside of petrol (fuel cost/economy) will be overridden by the cost of diesel maintenance and dpf replacement over time, not to mention the smell and noise of a diesel.

I love my kun26 but I wouldn't replace it with a current hilux diesel! That's why I regret letting my 80series TD go.

Have there been any DPF issues reported with the MY18 models?

My mate has a 18 SR5 which I really like. It does everything my 2005 1KD does, just a bit quieter, a bit more torque and obviously newer.

I can only tell you what my preference is, everyone is different.

I tow irregularly, and when I do it is between 1500 and 2250kg. I used to have a HZ Overlander cab-chassis, towed OK but the 308 in it was too gutless, really needed a 350, 377 (stroked 350) or big block, but was getting too old anyway. I replaced it with a VZ Cross8 and it did it easily, but I wanted more of a 4x4. Looked at all the 4x4 FBT exempt vehicles around, almost bought an F250 but couldn't get the V8 petrol or 7.3TD in a 4x4 auto single cab (others were too big). Drove them all. The ONLY one that could do what I wanted off the shelf was a V6 auto Hilux. None of the diesels were capable of towing at the speed limit, overtaking in NSW country where most overtaking lanes are uphill. If Toyota were serious and put an auto in the 79 series 'cruiser i'd consider one of those as it would do it easily too. Either the diesel or petrol Hilux will do what you want around town or on the highway, but for serious loading only the V6 really works, but only just - I supercharged mine so it now tows effortlessly. You pay the penalty though for all the extra power and torque - it uses more fuel standard or modified than the diesel. Plus when I bought mine the diesel was also totally useless to me as it had that awful 4spd auto, whereas later and now you at least get a decent auto with the diesel engine.

So I will be hanging onto mine for the foreseeable future. Nissan has hinted that they will be bringing the Titan into Australia RHD, and Fiat are talking about the Ram1500 as a factory RHD too, but they will only be useful to me if they have one of the big near 6.0L V8's in them and are sub $75k ex GST. Track record tells me you'll only be able to get the decent engine in some whiz-bang thing covered in useless cr@p, like a Wildtrack. All the rest will have to suffer with the dunger diesel!

You won't get an MY18 in a V6, you'll have to buy demo or used. And don't bother with a manual, not nice to drive and the clutch won't handle a blower if you chose to go down that path.

Old post I know but heres my 2c worth...

I had an 07 V6 auto SR5 for 6 years. I know everybody says it, but its been the best vehicle that I've owned for a long time. My driving was 80% work in city, 20% fun & towing. The V6 made daily driving easy & fun!!! I did 250,000Kms in it and the only breakdown was an A/C compressor.
I've just recently traded this for a 2016 V6 SR5 (obviously 2nd hand with 70K on the clock). I had to take the plunge due to work wanting me to upgrade, and for the extra towing capacity.
Now I have to be fair; its a heavier beast - and bullbar, ARB drawers, long range tank all add up. It's nice to drive, even more like a car than the last one. But I miss the '07, its like a go kart compared to the '16. The new 6-spd auto just feels like stirring porridge, and I'm using the sports shift more n more. As soon as new car warranty is finished I'll be investigating a different valve body to hopefully improve the auto performance, and give a torque converter lockup kit a try.
