Snapped wheel stud

Postby CoastalPainting on Fri, 21 Apr 2017 3:47 +0000

Today I noticed one of my rear wheel studs have snapped off. Not sure how long it's been like that.
Assuming ARB take the wheels off to fit the shocks and spring they would have been the last to tighten.
Will contact Toyota Monday morning.
Needless to say I'm pretty pissed off.
Am I the only one to have this issue lol?

I broke one once. was my fault... super easy to DIY. just pick up a new stud from Toyota and chuck it in. I think they cost $7 from memory.

Shops that use rattle guns can torque it right off. They don't spend the extra 2mins and use a torque wrench.

Just had my 20000 service and they finally replaced the stud. I went to pay and the buggers tried to charge me. They blamed my aftermarket wheels. After I caused a scene they agreed to wave the cost.

Hi mate....the pic doesn't give any usable info. I'm probably wrong but It appears that the incorrect wheel nut for the wheel type is being used. I have SR5 rims with SR5 nuts, and carry different nuts for the steel wheel spare.
A lot of broken wheel stud problems CAN be attributed to over tightening of the nuts. Ideally, the tyre shops should have a low torque setting for their rattle guns, and tighten with torque wrench instead of simply rattling the nut tight, then checking with the torque wrench to see if it's tight enough.
I've seen the tyre shop fit my tyres with the rattle gun then use the torque wrench, but the nut was already at full torque, suggesting the nut was too tight before the torque wrench was even put to the nut.
It's surprising how low the torque setting is for wheel nuts. Most people over tighten their wheel nuts.

Torque wrench is useless in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use it properly. I saw a fitter break 2 studs using a torque wrench. It was adjusted to 150ft pounds, to suit Landcruser, and he was doing up wheels on some womans bravo ute. Overheard him talking to his boss after the event..

How many full turns of the nut? Loosen a nut or a couple. Tighten finger tight. Remove nut counting full turns.

some say 7 or 8 turns.

If they are open nut, (no dome) and the stud is fully thru the nut, thats perfect
