New Vehicle Surface Rust

General discussion of basically anything related to the 2015> Hilux

I wouldn't be too worried about the rust on the exhaust and other machined surfaces. The exhaust is bare steel so will naturally rust and the machined surfaces are areas that won't be painted, because it would create an interference with close fitting parts.
For peace of mind though, you could always just paint over the areas with some kill rust paint (not the exhaust obviously)

The main area to watch out for serious rust is the crossmember under the radiator. There is a strip of foam here to help seal around the radiator. Water gets trapped and rust the crossmember out quickly.
I have an '05 hilux and this crossmember is nearly rust through  The good news though is that the crossmember looks like it wouldn't be too hard to replace.

This post has probably died by now but great pics Jogal. I have the same rust issues in exactly the same spots on my 2012 Sr5 (Nov build). Did your mate mention anything to his dealer?

The exhaust is stainless so shouldn't rust like that. I've just changed my exhaust on my oct 2012 build and don't have any spot rust whatsoever.

Although it may be stainless that statement is highly incorrect,

Some stainless will just it all depends on tr chromium level in it,
Exhaust stainless is very low hence why it will rust

same problem you get with stainless bolts supplied with many LED work lights - most of them are only 302 grade which is plain rubbish and will easily corrode (although slightly more resistant than bare steel obviously)

with the chassis rusting I've found a using black gloss cold gal works very well - unlike paint which just forms a barrier the cold gal bonds and prevents rust much better.

I see... Ridiculous amount of rust for stainless still.

I spoke with my dealer yesterday about my concerns with surface rust on the welds on the chassis. He said that its just surface rust, and good luck finding any car without it on the chassis at some point. He said that it was nothing to be conerned about and asked if i had purchased ERPS. i told him no, that i wasnt completely sold on it to which he said he wouldnt bother with it either! There are obvious stone chips on front end components that have surface rust on them. I rubbed back the bad spots with wire brush and sand paper, treated it with a converter, then sprayed some chassis black spray over it again. Good as new. I did notice that when i rubbed it back, the paint flaked off quite easily.

First thing I did with my truck was buy a 5L drum of INOX MX3 and sprayed the entire chassis and every knook and cranny. Still looks new.

This is exactly what my new 2014 (with 63 Ks on the clock) looks like! I also have surface rust on the exhaust manifold and edges of the tub tailgate. I know eventually this is going to happen, but I personally think that when you purchase a new car for $40K you're paying for the privilege of not having this.

I won't discuss the leaking transmission here...

Yep , check the machined surfaces on your spindles. Same deal.
Its the same with most manufacturers.
Spray some rust conveter on then an appropriate top coat if you feel the need

How 'annoyed' should I be?

Postby maningrid on Fri, 31 Mar 2017 7:21 +0000

New (MY17) SR5 delivered last Thursday, less than 400km on the clock and I just discovered this while looking for wiring routes for tub mounted battery.

I own a 1991 80 series Landcruiser with less visible rust than this so I'm 'just' holding it together right now.

How pissed should I be?

Cheers,

Michael

Really?! I find this outrageous for a reasonably expensive modern car. As I've said, I own a 26 year old Cruiser that looks way better than this one week old Hilux

Pretty normal to get some surface rust like that on new cars. The cruiser may have a nice thin coat of grease and oil to protect it ! I would not worry mate, it'll just eat away at you and they aren't going to do anything about it so let it go if you can.

Enjoy the new ute !

I find that horrendous if that is the accepted norm for new cars. (This is the first time I have ever bought a new New car)

What a crock, if they can't deliver a new vehicle in 'showroom condition' then I'd think a 10 or 20k discount should be applied. I did discover on day two some surface rust through the paint in the tub when checking out my new canopy but wondered if the installers had dropped a tool or two, guarantee they didn't touch the underside at all.

Seriously debating my purchase right now!

Dude I think your getting a little carried away! I work on every make of 4x4, 80% of them are new b4 they have even been pre delivered. They all have spots like this! Some more than others. If ya can see rust under paint then ya should be upset but all those surfaces are just raw machined edges that would have had machine oil on them but got washed of as a result of the amount of times its be washed b4 you got it. If ya that concerned about it go get some fish oil and go to town. The stealership will just have a laugh at ya!

Buyers regret ?
Just go and ask for a $10k refund !

Get out to the beach or for a nice off-road trip and you'll forget all about the surface rust on delivery issue mate.
