My family bought cars in 2010 (Honda Accord Euro), 2016 (Mazda 3) and 2017 (Hilux SR5), and I think this is largely normal for new cars. As Toyz said, these are just unfinished machined surfaces that have developed a superficial layer of rust while in transit (mostly due to seaspray while at the dock). Even if the rust were removed, it'd just return unless the surface was painted. Why didn't they paint it at the factory? Probably due to Toyota - as well as all the other manufacturers - deciding that localised rust on some parts won't cause any problems.

Just spray the surface rust with Inox or similar and forget it, these bits are large, heavy steel and the likelihood of the rust causing failure is non-existent. Stop worrying and drive your Lux with a smile! :D

BTW My bro-inlaw gets under his Colorado with a polishing rag and black/white touch-up but unless he's worried about what the guy he runs over thinks of his underside, I reckon he's a bit too keen, unless of course if he rolls it over occasionally. I can just imagine the poor sucker he just ran over saying... "geeez your underside is a bit dirty mate!"
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Thought it was an April's fools post for sure.

Ok, I'll calm down and go to town with the Inox.
Thanks for all the replies.

mate i wouldnt worry about the machined surfaces , just concentrate on the exposed bolt holes and threads to avoid rust starting on them. I live near the beach so a bit of under car maintenance is required to keep the rust off.

Fishoilene.
It is a bit piss poor, but that's how they all are now. Yep, I know, $50,000 plus for a ute.
Coppereze or grease for the bolts, especially the bash plate bolts. Anywhere that needs to be serviced.

Its actually quite helpful I think.
At least you know where its going to rust the first time you drive on the beach..

Get a grip mate
It's a Hilux not a Range Rover you didn't pay 100K for it (and I'm sure they are the same anyway) :D
I pay 15 K for a new dirt bike and still have to pull it apart and grease linkages, put on better tyres and tubes etc.

Looks like i might be one of the few that wouldnt be happy with this. Fair enough it gets some surface rust during transport but id expect it to be cleaned up and oiled before i picked up the ute. $50k+ on a car id want the dealer to put his apprentice on it for an hour to get it sorted.

Threads merged and title edited for clarification

Same deal with the previous gen
For what its worth I was annoyed to receive a brand new vehicle with rust too but this is what machined and unpainted surfaces do

I must admit this is very shoddy workmanship for a major manufacturer where a little bit of sealant or oil/grease would solve the problem at the point of manufacture but I suppose it would add about $5 in labour and materials which might make the vehicle too expensive to compete with other manufacturers

Spot on the Ceo looks and thinks about his bonus, and i quote.

"Toyota Motor Corp. has retained its post as the world's best-selling auto maker, saying Wednesday it sold 10.15 million vehicles world-wide in 2015."

10.15 million x 5 bucks for each car = 10 new holiday houses in bonuses. - welcome to the grubby new world. :o
