Gen 8 Towing performance

General discussion of basically anything related to the 2015> Hilux

I agree about how Inspectors deal with them and yes this is why authorities talk about trailer GTM, but the worst you'll get in that instance is normally a fine and the inconvenience of leaving the trailer at the spot it got inspected. The bigger concern is Insurance in the case of an accident. Especially one involving a fatality or serious injury, where all relevant info would be measured. Not understanding the various loadings involved would be no defence, if you tow you must know the rules just like you are meant to understand speed limits, what dotted and solid lines mean etc.

The starting point with full fuel load is Kerb weight. Tare is the same thing minus fuel load (but with a bit added back in - GMH also called this shipping weight). I agree the better way is to set it all up how you want it and weigh it - but manufacturer's cannot know what you'll put on it, all they can tell you is the Kerb and/or Tare plus the GVM and GCM. The point here being my original post's first line: "Just make sure you do the GCM and GVM sums before committing", and you can only do those sums with the manufacturer's data, so the OP doesn't fall foul of false advertising.

True about the OP but for those who already have the lux a trip to weighbridge with all the fruit will give you a definite answer, no calculation can beat a weighbridge certificate. Tare and kerb are not specific enough because the DO vary from vehicle to vehicle.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Not to mention most people wouldn't be legal to drive anything over 4500kg gcm with a car licence.

Just got my 2016 sr5 remapped and towing performance is unreal. Was good before but now it wants to pull the towball off the back...economy has improved aswell. Highly recommended.

Do you have any dyno reports to show us the improvements ????
Or any figures just to warrant the upgrade

It went from 98.5kw to 127.5rwkw and 345nm to 470nm at the tyres. Without touching boost and being gentle on it because it still has the standard clutch. Pick up is like day and night and economy has improved dramatically. There are a few reputable tuners around Aus that will remap aswell.

I tow a trailer with a mixer, mud-boards, barrows and scaffolding. Keep forgetting it's there, no shit.

Gday all. I've got a KUN26 and tow a ~ 1.75t camper trailer with it. We're looking to upgrade to a caravan. The missus is keen on a Jayco which has:
Tare weight (kg) 1920
Loading weight (kg) 475
Tow ball weight (kg) 145
https://www.jayco.com.au/range/pop-tops/journey-pop-top/floor-plans/outback/journey-1758-3objy-my21

So we're looking at an appropriate vehicle to tow it with. I'm aware of the GVM vs GCM issues and I'm tossing up between a new gen 8 hilux and a 70 series cruiser dual cab as a result. As I understand it you can legally load the 70 series right up to it's GVM (ie over a ton of payload, 2190kg kerb weight, 3300kg GVM) and still tow the full 3500kg (GCM 6800kg). Whereas with the hilux, when at full GVM (3050kg), you can only tow 2800kg max since the GCM is 5850kg.

So towing a loaded caravan at ~2400kg seems quite doable for the gen 8, even with 4 people and gear in the car. So I'm struggling to justify the extra money for a 70 series. For what it's worth, we're looking at the manual hilux since it's a few thousand cheaper and the KUN26 is manual.

I'm wondering if anyone can give me opinions on towing this type of weight on sand and we do like to go to places like Fraser Island. Any other opinions? Whilst I'd love a 70 series dual cab, the budget won't. I've always been of the opinion that smaller dual cabs weren't appropriate vehicles for towing large caravans, but then again, this isn't a particularly large van.

Thanks

I don't think this is correct. I don't think a car licence limits you to a GCM of 4500kg. If that were the case, most grey nomads would require different licences.

Gee wombat if you plan on towing that Jayco on Fraser Island you definitely need the 70 series LC. The Hilux would be ok and at its limits on the road, but on sand..... Definitely need a 70 LC for that. In the long run it would pay for itself, not to mention the fines for overloading and towing out of a sandy spot. Just my 10cents worth. ;)
Besides, money has never been cheaper so put it on your home loan :D

Thanks for the feedback Gipsy. The problem with money is that we already want to add to the home loan to do some renovations, and I'm not convinced there will be enough on offer for that + a LC70 + a caravan. But we'll put the application in and see. The other option is to look at second hand 70s for similar money to the lux.

Or we could just forget about towing to fraser and take the swags instead. Maybe that will convince the minister for finance that the 70 is the way to go :D

Good luck buying anything at the moment! Been looking at something to replace my Hilux, impossible to buy anything and when you can they are way overpriced. Used stuff is dearer than new.

Wombat, here's another option, the Hilux should be ok on the road with the Jayco, just leave it at home when you go to Fraser Island. There's plenty of great accommodation on the island and you can still go for a blast on sand if you're up for it.

Something that size is anchor in sand. Doesn’t matter too much what vehicle is towing it.

Reconsider where you plan on taking a huge caravan. Although the hilux will tow it easily on the road, it would struggle on Fraser (and so would a 70 series no matter what the fan boys say).

I still say if you want to regularly tow 2000kg and above for distances, especially in challenging conditions (like country roads, hilly journeys etc, basically anything but flat highways) forget any Hilux sized vehicle. You want something that weighs over 2500kg and has around 5.0L or more. If you just tow a boat to and from the ramp, or a smaller van within 100km from home will be fine. Or a sub 1500kg camper trailer. Otherwise you just end up being a moving roadblock and flog the hell out of your vehicle.

Yes. but the biggest surprise was watching Auto experts review of just how poor that engine is with a single turbo.
Different world once its twin turbo'd

Yah, the twin turbo on my volvo is pretty good. More power and torque out of 2400cc than the 1vd in the 70 series.

Performance isn't everything though, at least for me... I'd rather be running a 1kd or 1gd for the reliability than a highly strung euro engine.
