Postby crustie on Sat, 01 Oct 2016 6:18 +0000

Hi
I have the current 2016 SR5 auto 4wd
When I put it in low 4wd the bell noise keeps going until I put it back into high 4wd

No,is it actually engaging low range ?

Are you going from 4H to 4Lo while stopped in neutral ?

try reversing a couple of meters next time before going from 4hi to 4low the rangers at work sometimes need us to do this or they won't change... also as it's an auto try knocking it into neutral while changing.

X2... try neutral... you can shift hi2 to hi4 on the fly but not sure about hi4 to lo4

You can't h2 to h4 on fly unless you have manual locking hub and there locked in

With an auto it's best to be in park and foot on brake before shifting h4 or l4, In neutral the output put shaft tends to turn, and can be just enough to not allow engagement, but once shifted, I found with my last auto neutral after park wait a second or 2 then into drive or reverse
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

According to the manual you can change from H2 to H4 at up to 100 km/h. It's the H4 to L4 shift that needs to be done stopped.

I agree gjn, cos I've done it in my auto with a 2.5 tonne van on in deep mud (not that I enjoyed the experience!). Caravan park sent me to a 'high site where there is no water' and I found the site knee deep in grass-covered mud!

It must auto lock hubs first then select h4 for it to work at that speed
As engaging a non moving part to a moving part (h2 to h4) would cause damage

I just saw in manual page 329 where it says that

I haven't read page 329
However it does clearly say H2 to H4 at speed up to 100kms
Surely you don't have to stop to go to H4 from H2

IIRC it was at speeds at up to 80 km/h you can go from H2 to H4 and vice versa in the N70's. I've done it plenty of times on the move, but at probably no more than 40 km/h at the most.

Chucking it into L4 however, you definitely need to be at a stop for that one.

John... auto lock hubs?? Huh so how did I do that without knowing?

I just pulled the stick and it went in like a hot knife through butter

There are 3 types of hub, 2 are free wheeling 3rd isn't
Manual, you get out and turn the dial
Auto, when you select 4wd it lock them
permanently locked, front diff is always rotating

When hubs are locked front and rear wheels travel at same speed, and so do the gears in the transfer case, so shifting at speed is ok
If front diff is free wheeling and you try to engage 4wd you'll have gears gears trying to engage to gears that arnt turning,
Going h4 to h2 can be done at any speed as your only side gauging the front
High to low you can normally shift under 8kph but best to stop

You can't get a Hilux with manual hubs anymore, the SR5 disconnects at the diff, the actual driveshaft is always turning, can't remember exactly how the SR's engage, but pretty sure they can also handle on-the-fly high range shifts without preparation.

That said, with the electronic activation in this model, if there was any issue there'd be safeguards to hold off on activating until the right conditions are met.

SR5 used to be auto hubs and Sr was locked to the diff hence higher fuel consumption, my 2013 VSC Sr had the automatic hubs though but not sure what system it is now.
