No love for the 1GR-FE Hilux?

Postby Dave_o on Tue, 20 Sep 2016 7:24 +0000

Having a hard time finding a demo model, thats for sure. The ubiquitous 2.8 seems to have made the petrol variant not even worth the dealer having on the yard, even reviews - for what they're worth - are thin on the ground.
Cant understand why they're not more popular. I've owned a Prado with the same engine in the past. Silky smooth, powerful, reliable. Yes, they obviously use more fuel, but you're getting more performance, so to a point thats to be expected.
Anybody here own a 2016 they'd like to comment on?

I had the V6 in my 2006 SCC Hilux from new until I traded it in on a current model 4x4 SCC last month. Loved the engine and would have had another in the new truck if it were available in a SCC variant but the model range that the engine is available in now is quite limited.

Those of us who need a single cab are quite limited for choice, no Hi Rider, no V6 and no SR5 spec.

I had a 2010, 2.7L petrol single cab for a little while. Loved it - quiet, super smooth, and did everything asked of it. I actually prefered the Petrol 2.7L to the 3.0L V6 diesel the co upgraded me to.

The new 2016 2.8L Diesel is a very refined and unbelievably quiet power plant as far as diesel goes.

Loads of love for the 1GR-FE V6 mate, one of toyota's most bulletproof long living engines. Great low end torque & power.

Petrol will make a huge comeback , in the next decade, for a few reasons. Europe and us markets are already heading that way I think.

I have love for them. Trading my 2012 3.0l diesel in on a new SR5 V6. Pick it up next week hopefully.

I wouldn't buy any available in Australia dual cab except a V6 auto Hilux. There is daylight to second choice for me in a new car, and second choice in reality would be a low km used old shape V6 auto. That will change though if HSV start fitting a supercharged petrol engine to a Colorado or someone does something sensible like a V8 in a Ranger or even if Nissan starts fitting the 5.6L V8 to their ute.

Yeah I agree. I live 5mins from work so if figured a DPF is not the best thing for me. Plus I get a fuel card in my salary so I'm not worried about fuel economy.

I think the 2.8 is just the better choice for most people, having driven most of the dual cabs on the market it is by far the best all round diesel, a 4.0l v6 turbo diesel would have been better but the 1GD is a great little motor.
Most cars these days are moving to DIT petrol engines though which is a good thing as the efficiency, power and torque is getting closer to diesels.
