Apple carplay/Android Auto.

Postby mitchnewy on Sun, 18 Sep 2016 12:49 +0000

Hi all,

All articles I've read indicate Toyota is not currently considering Apple carplay/Android Auto.

If this changes in the future will the head units be able to software update?

Id really like this feature available for functionality and map updates etc.

Just bumping an old thread.
Has anyone with a gen 8 gone down this path? I find the Toyota head unit clunky, none of the ‘apps’ ever work (I’m in a rural area) and even the sat nav is not all that great - I’ve got a $100 Garmin with more features than the Toyota sat nav (speed alerts, camera positions etc)
I would have to replace the whole unit- ken wood have one that would do the job. I’d also like to add in a wireless tyre pressure monitoring system too.
Anyone got any comments?
Cheers.

Check out Arrow auto electrical, if you are on Facebook.
They do a plug and play module that allows you to have full use of your iPhone/Android device via the AV selection on the factory head unit.
The videos look good and it is the path i will be heading down eventually.

Yes, for now, Toyota is offering Apple Car Play and Amazon Echo connectivity for its 2018 models. You can also read more details from here https://www.forbes.com/sites/greggardne ... 18-models/. However, if you don't have 2018 model then I don't think you need to worry more because many car stereos like https://fanguider.com/best-car-stereos/ also work effectively with Android as well. So, if you have an old car then Pioneer AVH-3300NEX could be a better option for you. Yes, it works for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

I don't think this applies to the Hilux... at least not for the time being

Another really good head unit is the Polaris. Comes with either Tom Tom or Hema preloaded or both for an extra cost. also has the option for apple car play or android.

Anyone know what happened to Arrow Auto Elect. I was interested in their mod.
Anyone purchased a 2 din Android unit that they can recommend.

I bought one from these guys, had it for over a year and happy with it.

Unlike the big brands what I like about this one is the android is very open and you can customise and do a lot with it, it's just like a tablet in the dash. Great for Hema and anything else you want to install from the play store like email, you tube, movies, whatever.

A couple minor fiddly issues installing, they are in Melbourne and helped clarify a few details over the phone. I sent them the details of the extra wiring needed in the loom adapter for gen 8 so they should have fixed that now.

Edit: Just to make it clear everything is in the unit itself, not limited functionality beamed from Android Auto from a phone. Doesn't matter who's driving or if a phone is on or where it is, it all just works as it should with the vehicle. You can connect your phone if you want to.

I have purchased a new head unit from Joyingauto. https://www.joyingauto.com/joying-2016- ... ation.html
Only been in a couple of weeks but everything seems ok at the moment. Very easy to install, watched a couple of videos from the mob at Carbon Car Systems. Used Joyongs GPS and microphone. Have a factory reverse camera and have purchased a harness from Carbon Car Systems for about $40.
Steering wheel connection worked automatically. Bluetooth is phone is clear.
Paid extra for tpsm app and external caps. Have installed wiki camps, camps australia, oziexplorer, obd2, spotify and all work. Early days but everything is great.

I chose joying as they were sure it would fit my car and also the specs, 4gb of ram and 64gb storage.

Would it be possible to retrofit a unit from the new, current model Hilux which comes with CarPlay?

I don’t want to fit an aftermarket unit and could imagine that there are quite a few of us who’d prefer that route.

Hi OffroadingOnline
I’ve been following your post as I’ve been looking at a number of replacement head units
Are you still happy with yours? Any issues?
Does the gps display between the speedo and rev counter work?
What gps software does it run? Can you install others such as Hema or Tom Tom?
What were the bits you bought from Carbon?
Thanks
Bob

I am very Happy with my unit.
My unit has a 4G dongle built in. I was unable to see the sim card but found out online you had to insert it in a smart phone, remove the pin or unlock it, reboot the unit (with a needle in front hole and it worked).
I have a data only sim from Aldi, data over 365 days.
I have installed Oziexplorer, Exploreoz, Wiki Camps and Camps Australia among others. No sure about Hema program but I use the Hema maps in Oziexplorer.
The unit comes with a working copy of Sygic. Seems to have the latest maps.
In the end I did not need parts from Carbon. When I got the parts (reversing camera connection) I realized that the unit already had the correct connection, so was all plug and play. I thought I had a factory camera that needed a 12volt to 5 volt reducer but it turned out to be an after market one fitted by Toyota.
I watched this video a few times https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XTlMtDezu4
I'm not mechanically minded but it was a breeze. Would recommend one of those forked dash removing tools.
A bit different as when you remove the unit there is no need to fit the brackets back in. I don't think they fit anyway. The unit is single DIN and every thing just clicks back in attached to the panel.
I fed the TPMS dongle and 4G SIM holder into the glove box. The GPS and 4G antenna onto the dash .
There is no GPS info on the dash between speedo and rev counter. Sygic has a window with the same info in it, still playing with it.
The right hand bits on the steering wheel work but dont show any information.
Hope this helps. Would I buy another one, at the moment yes. I have joined a facebook joying auto group that has a lot of info
The OBD2 sender that I use is a wireless one, not Bluetooth.
I am still not sure about number of bluetooth connections. I have my phone connected to send and receive calls via unit and I think it only allows for one bluetooth connection.
Phone on bluetooth, OBD2 on wireless and data on 4G Google maps etc)
Still playing with it as there are a million settings.

Bob it has a Glonass GPS system.

Cheers Danny
