Diesel - how many revs

Postby gjn on Fri, 29 Jul 2016 7:16 +0000

I've been driving a 2006 V6 Hilux for the last 10 years and have now swapped to a 2.8 4x4. Obviously there is a difference in the operating nature of both engines, I now need to get my head around what revs to run the diesel at and the manual is not a lot of help.

So, any tips as to what rev range would be comfortable for this engine, I conscious of not lugging the engine, especially while running it in (it's done a total of 75 km so far) but I don't want to race it either.

Diesels make all their power low in the rev range. You don't need to ring their tits off to get em movin. If your lookin for a a number that's sorta like how longs a peice of string, gun to my head I think anything over 3500rpm is too much. (Short of towing or 4wding etc). Horses for courses mate, evrery blokes gonna have a different opinion. :)

For the 3.0 1KD-FTV, I'm quite happy to keep the revs around 1700-1900 for the general cruising/coasting along. I change into 4th around 60km/h plus on flat roads to save fuel. Anything below that I tend to keep it in 3rd. In the lower gears 1st to 2nd to 3rd I tend to change up when it's around the 2300-2500 mark if I'm not in any real hurry. At 2800 rpm though, that's definite grounds for shifting and I rarely if ever let it go above 3000 unless I'm intentionally giving it a bit. Usually when I see a Triton/Nav/Pootrol in front of me.

Interested to know the shift points in the new 2.8 and how they compare to the old 3.0.

You want to push the skinny peddle to the floor when going through the gears but keep rpm low
My old 2.8 has been driven like this never over 3800
But try to keep under 3500 with shifts at 3200
My rpm @100 is 2700 in 5 or 3200 in 4
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

This is pretty close :D . 1500 to 2500 is a good place to be, with more sometimes necessary, particularly in sand or towiing.

BUT if the engine is new, it needs to be massaged a bit to make sure the rings seat properly. Plenty of load accelerating up hill in 4th but not for miles and miles. Back off and let it run down on compression in the same gear. Do it a few times. Don't need to go past 3000/3500 doing this, and 2500/3000 will work well.

Some of the ideas on what are low revs posted here are a giggle. 3500 is low ??? No wonder LR tanks are so popular

Thanks all for the responses. It seems to confirm my sense that it was happiest around the 2000 mark. Can't wait till it's run in.

A lot different to the last diesel I drove which had a useable rev range from 500 to 1400 and 18 gears...
