Anyone done a speaker upgrade?

Just wondering, has anyone upgraded their door speakers? If so, what did you go for and was it worth it?
I'm not really impressed with the base of the standard ones and not sure I can be bothered trying to wedge a sub in there somewhere.
Thanks in advance.

Subs fit easy behind the rear seats
A speaker upgrade is only as good as the install,
The install is 80% of the quality in output the other 20% is the speaker choise

I went the hole hog, did all 4 doors, subs and amps, 1000% better then stock

I have a SounStream slimline Sub/Amp cable tied behind the rear seat... if you're wanting to do it on the cheap, that's the way.
Image

Also I have some JBL 6" 3-ways that I have screwed into the plastic pieces that the factory speakers came in... just get the dremel out and cut the old cones out...

But I say again, I have done this on the cheap to see if the mud would get it my gear.. I will be installing them properly if they last.

If you want to keep cost down
Get a slimline sub, 4ch amp and 1 set of good component speakers for front
And leave tears off head unit
Next cheaper would be a 5ch amp, slimline sub, 2 sets of speakers

Pioneer 5ch will be cheaper option at around $300
Rockford fosgate R series at around $360
The Rockford fosgate p1000.5 at just under $500 would be my amp of choice

Get a 2ohm 10 or 12" slimline sub in box like the kicker ones
Then 2 sets of comps, you'll need to hear in person as my tests and your are different

Best way is a LOC that you tee into the rear speaker unless your amp have 2 voltage input settings
If you amp has 5v+ input setting you need nothing, just use Front or rear speaker cable to tee off

Try doing a four speaker upgrade (Splits in the front, I kept the tweeters in the Kicks so they aren't harsh like the Door tops) first. You may be surprised as to how much improvement you get from that alone.

If that fails to impress go for a decent head unit (Id do that first with the four new speakers if finances prevail) and have a think about an amp.
If thats not pullin ya pud then try a couple of the slim line subs.

just finished installing full set of alpine DDlinear speakers in my extra cab. Also running the alpine powerpack amp 45rms x 4. Was looking at getting sub, but with these speakers no need to run one. Also dynamatted the doors etc and that itself made a big difference

This sounds like the amount of work I'm looking to do. I presume there's a pre out for the amp?
The ddlinears are 6.5", do they slip straight in ? Have you kept the original tweeters?
Roughly how much did your setup cost, pirate Pete ?

Thanks for your help everyone.

I have a 2008 4-door (TGN26R). Regarding speaker/radio upgrade, if budget allows, I would recommend the following:
- Replace the head unit (use Toyota spacers to convert standard double din unit to fit the dash). My JVC KW-AVX640 Head Unit cost US$268 in 2011, is old now but still works like a charm, including the blue tooth attachment. Much better are available for less these days, including android units. Of course there are also higher end double din units for more. This allowed me to add a cheap backup camera. I recommend the higher end cameras.
- Replace all door speakers - I used Pioneer TS-A1685R 6-1/2" / 6-3/4" 4-Way TS Series Coaxial Speakers (US$46.3/pair on Amazon) (stock speaker cut out and it's frame used as the door basket). The speaker's centre tweeters pushed slightly against the door panel that covers it, but no issues from that.
- Install flat sub in custom MDF box behind rear seat. I used the Pioneer TS-SW2501S4 10-Inch Step Up Shallow S4 Subwoofer ($US91). Installed since 2012 and still pounding away.
Custom MDF box dimensions: width 30"; Height 12.5"; Inner depth at Bottom 5.5"; Inner depth at Top 3.5"; Speaker cutout 9.25"; Cutout as close to the bottom as the speaker would allow - about 2". This gave a tight fit that pressed a bit against the back seat with the speaker protective grille in place. I recommend you take your own measurements, but make the box as wide as possible leaving space for the amplifier to stand against the back wall of cab. The speaker box restricts lifting of the seat but still allows access to the storage boxes below.
Install additional tweeters in rear doors to even out high-end. I used Alpine SPR-10TW 1-inch Silk Ring Dome Car Audio Component Tweeters (US$70/Pair on Amazon) in the back doors and maintained the stock tweeters in the front door. They new tweeters came with crossovers.
Power it all with a power amp installed beside the sub box behind the rear seat. I used a POWER ACOUSTIK GT5-2500 Gothic Five Channel Amplifier (US$127 on Amazon). Newer available.

look for newer and improved versions to all that I have listed above, as this was done a few years ago. An excellent website is http://www.crutchfield.com and of course Amazon.com.

I hope this info is useful.

Hi mate no the factory units dont have rca outputs. I had to use the line output to the speakers. If you wanted you could always get a hi-low level converter than run rca leads depending on where you want to mount your amp. Mine just sits behind the ac controls due to the size

The ddlinears do fit nicely but you either have to get premade spacers or just make them yourself. My extra cab didnt come with the "tweeter " pod so i just fitted my onto the trim with the angled spacers.

Price will depend on where you get your stuff from but at a rough guess here are the prices
spacers x 4 $120
ddlinear splits $360
ddlinear component $250
Alpine powerpack amp $200
Dynamat $190
