Chassis Surface Rust?

Postby mitchnewy on Thu, 16 Jun 2016 11:51 +0000

Hi All,

I have a Feb 2016 SR5 DC. I've noticed some minor surface rust on the weld points on the chassis on the rear wheel arch area. I've not had the car anywhere near the beach or off road.

Is this normal? Should I be contacting Toyota?

No it's not normal Mitch, take it back to your dealer for correction.

Mate I had the same thing on my old one when I got it new in 2012. Its pretty standard. The chassis sit out in a yard before being put together into a car and you will often seen areas where the paint is slightly different; this is often where they have been stacked on each other and then touched up.
Also, after a bit of travel on dirt roads, that area will be peppered with stone chips, and will have areas of surface rust all over it.

Mine also had some rusty welds under the bonnet (on the chassis), showed the dealer.... not at all concerned.

I have this on mine, when I took it back I was told it was no problem which I am not entirely happy about.

I have this as well. At first glance i thought it was rust, closer inspection im not so sure. It is smooth to touch and kind of looks like a bronze paint. I may be wrong.

StuartO - You could be right. I will take another closer look. I just saw the differences on the welds and immediately thought it was rust. Just odd that it hasn't all been painted black during production?

I showed the dealer the same thing on my Fortuner and I was told that the welds are bronzed and that the paint falls of the bronzed sections.

I had the same thing on the muffler of my hilux. I don't care if it sits in a yard, it's a brand new bloody car! You pay damn good money for them so they should be perfect. Toyota told me the same thing, "no big deal". Not happy Toyota!
