True or false

I been to 3 stores looking to pick up a new HiLift and all out of stock. The guy at 4WDSupacentre just told me HiLift jacks have been banned - true or false?

Hmm, might be related to a crack-down on them? They're not banned but they need to meet some Australian standards.

Here are two articles from ProductSafety.gov.au from 18 April 2016 and 11 May 2016 wherein retailers were penalised due to not meeting those standards. Could've spooked other retailers into not selling them or ensuring their supplier is meeting those standards.

"...fourth high lift jack retailer to pay an infringement notice penalty following an ACCC product safety surveillance campaign. The ACCC purchased high lift jacks from a number of online retailers... the jacks were tested by a National Association of Testing Authorities approved facility to assess whether the jacks complied with the mandatory safety standard."

I bloody hope not as I am also planning on getting one! I saw them in the ARB tent at the Caravan and Camping show in April, I wouldn't think they'd be banned surely?

Going by the other reports on here about the saftey standards, it probly means all the people bringing in cheap jacks now cant sell them, same old story, you get what you pay for ;)

I picked up my Hi lift jack up secondhand at around 23°15'58.3"S 129°21'34.8"E over 20 years ago. They can be very useful, but also quite dangerous, things. While they do vary in quality, the dangerous part is really much more to do with inexperienced operators than the jack itself.

I have not heard of them being 'banned' but I would not be that surprised if they were. Considerable thought and care needs to be used if you are going to use one to lift a vehicle. There are other better and safer options in many cases.

That said, they do have various uses. The most frequent use I have put mine to is probably tyre bead breaking, for which they are very effective.

Just my 2 cents worth.....

AS2359 still permits high lift jacks.......... reading this at work the other day. Maybe the infringements were to do with the labelling as Dan Z points out they are dangerous if you try to lower them without a set amount of weight on them....
