What is the maximum load you have towed?

Postby wyworrie on Sat, 07 May 2016 9:37 +0000

Over the last couple of months I have been towing 6tonne of fire wood. Two trips per day on the weekends. Not for any great distance - about 5k's each trip. The point is I am amazed at how easy the D4D can pull this load. It is clearly overloaded but still does it with ease. Made me wonder what others have towed.

I remember when I was a young fella, I could lift heavy things with ease too, but my back lets me know about it every time I move now.
Just cause the car is doing it don't mean your not doing serious damage.

Not towing but I had around 1.5 tonnes of ironbark in the tray of my dual cab for a short trip around 12 k's. Stock suspension. The leaves were just about inverted. Needless to say I avoided speed bumps like the plague. After unloading, the leaves were flatter than they used to be! Time for an upgrade, methinks!

Eerr, yesterday, I had 1.5 tonnes in a trailer and 0.5 tonnes in the tub, drove with no problems, so went back for a second load, 1.7 tonnes in trailer, 0.5 tonnes in tub. Everything pulled no problems, running on LPG for around 15km each trip.

Obviously your cars insurance wont cover you but you should make sure your life insurance is up to date.

If your that over loaded you probably don't have tear away brakes either so when the trailer rips the ball off or breaks the tow hitch there is nothing to stop the 5 or 6 tonne pushing through your ute.

comforting to know there are idiots doing this on the same roads our wives and kids use.

When the rta goes to my local servo and does random trailer checks 80% of them are over loaded
Gross Weight isn't always the resion
So there are a lot of us doing it and many have no idea they are
As far towed my 09 had a triaxel trailer behind it for atleast the first 15-20,000kms pullin 5-5500kg half of that, about a 160km round trip
Getting the ball weight correct is the key and making sure your trailer is setup for it
I ran a 75mm ball and 3.5t tow hitch
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

Toyzx, jeez I've never seen that on a Hilux before! It's only with multiple Tritons I've heard it happening to.

Would you happen to know the story behind the one you posted?

That one pictured is actually a navara, have only ever seen hiluxs crack but never all the way thru like this one. From memory he was just way overloaded, massive horse float I think. Only thing stopped the whole rear end getting ripped off was his tray! I reckon if he had a tub back it would've ripped it off.

Following on from this I've been told by the dealership this new Hilux has a stronger chassis.
Is this right and how is it stronger? Seems the same as the kun. Reason I ask is when my kun is loaded I have always disliked the "flexi feeling" while doing some off-roading .

The new one feels a lot more solid.

That's great to hear. Drove one yest for an extended test drive. Impressed with the manual. Felt more rigid going over some mounds at home but unloaded it's hard to tell. Think I'll get one

The guy I am getting my tow bar off raised a point with me when he went to install it the other day. I plan to put an aftermarket tray on and he said if it were too long, he wouldn't be able to rate the towbar to the full 3500kg if he has to stretch it out past the tray.

My question is, what's everyone's tray size for a dual cab? The dimensions I'm getting told are 1900W X 1800L. With that dimension I am seeing a lot of towballs sitting just under the tray or people installing extended tongues.
