I'm just trying, or want to get a close reading.

Sure you can do it manually, but once your terrain changes so does your consumption.
Working out the fuel economy on bitumen is totally different to what you'll get on sandy track. i want to be able to plan and work out fuel stops and have a margin of error, or something up my sleeve

Well that's easy, my gen7 d4d tows 2.5 tonne and I know I need fuel somewhere around 400ks but unloaded and empty I get to fuel light and have 150ks up my sleeve. If going into unknown territory I carry 20lts in a Jerry can so laden I have 150ks including the extra 20ltrs and well over 200ks unladen in the extra 20 ltrs when the tank is bone dry.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Anyone got some good tips for towing? Currently on a 3 week touring trip left Brissy and currently down passed Sydney. We have a brand new SR dual cab auto 2.8 with a fibreglass canopy. We have a rooftop tent that creates a fair bit of resistance and I am towing my 4.6m boat.

Have done over 1000km on the trip and averaging about 15 litres per 100km. Staying slightly under the speed limit most the time and just driving in normal mode.

Don't use cruise aside from long straight level sections and keep it to 4th/5th if under 100kmh will probably bet you the best economy. If an extra $2 per 100km isn't going to break the bank then just drive it normally and relax !

Creaky I noticed cruise uses a boat load more! Especially with the hills. I will try manually put it in gears and see how it goes, cheers

Use the power button on leave it in auto if it dosent want 6th gear it wont use it. My fuel economy went down when in power mode it didnt have to work as hard towing. Still not real good 15.5 per 100km

U pull it across to sport mode which defaults to forth gear and then push up once that will default to 5th max I would use normal drive towing.

I drive 90% of time like this and when I am on the freeway push it up to 6th.

Hey guys. Just wondering if my economy sounds normal to yous

Its a 2.8l td auto 2017 sr5 with a 3” fox suspension lift, 16x8 0 offset mickey ts and 33” nitto trail grapplers. The lux has got 3500km and im averaging 11.9l/100km gettin around 600-630km to a tank but when i fill up it fills up at 65l so theres still another 15l in there. Does anyone know why the fuel light is coming on so early? Wish i cluld do over 700km to a tank before filling up

It's as it should be. Some people don't like it but it's done for a reason. The pump doesn't like to get hot and the diesel keeps it cooled. Some people had their tank adjusted by bending the rod the hold the flotation device that check how much is left but i don't really see a need for that, you know there is still some 15-20 liters left so you know how far you can go, but as said it's not good to drive with just a little diesel left as the pump can get damaged.

that's pretty good with those mods, mine was up around 12.5-13lph ave with 65,000km's on it before I sold it. They seem to get worse on fuel as the km's build, I didn't have a catch can or any engine mods, but had bigger tyres and 2" lift and ARB Summit bar.

Just passed 10,000km.
Averaging 11.9L
80-90% inner city driving.
Always have 200kg in the back.
Tyres on 35PSI
Was getting 12.3L when I was running around on 29PSI which is the handbook recommendation.

The only way to measure fuel consumption (reasonably) accurately and easily is to run standard diameter tyres, with a calibrated Scanguage II, always filling up to the brim which takes time.

On the two Hiluxes I run now (Gen 7 & 8) both return figures in line with expectation. Which is nowhere near the combined cycle figures in the marketing blurb. They are used for the hard yards, heavy, lot of towing, tough conditions, they ain't city cars... However the Gen 8's dash readout is consistently 0.75 l/100km under the truth... it runs standard sized AT tyres on the factory rims but tells wee porky pies about how much juice its drinking. On both vehicles the Scanguage always predicts the Fill Up litres to within 0.5 - 1.0 litre which considering the Gen 7 has a 140l tank isn't bad effort, eh. I complained to the dealer about the computer's fibbing and got precisely nowhere. The only time I can confuse Scanguage is when theres a lot more low range 4WD up very long steep hills, and then very low fuel usage engine braking all the way back down, that usually knocks it out by a couple of litres.

I also have this situation with the light coming on with 20% of the fuel capacity still in the tank, but I'm used to it and let the Scanguage tell me whats what anyway.

I can't imagine life without Scanguage! So many fascinating variables to analyse and discuss with the wife on long journeys ;)

I didn't see the light this time I filled which is a first, we were in Wollongong about to drive up the freeway so topped it up.
57l with 630km.
Did some towing on that tank too, 2 loads of 1 ton each of top dressing.

Had the new manual lux for about 40000k”s now on all terrains, drive for 150 k”s after fuel light comes on as sensor is way to conservative and I get 900 k”s from about 72 litres, mainly freeway driving. Haven’t had one issue with the car yet.. stoked

I dont know what scangauge is but its like sausage for dyslexics. Its easy enough to reset the tacho after filling up, drive, fill up again and dived the litres filled by kms/100. Basic.
Eg: 110 L : (730km : 100) = 13.69L/100km

Fuelly.com

compare your usage to others, and log your own fuel consumptions.

My 2006 Hilux (http://www.fuelly.com/car/toyota/hilux/ ... ve9r/49706) has averaged 13.9l/100 since october 2010

the majority of that has been towing caravans, trailers and horse floats

but you can search and compare vehicles on there.

Fuel consumption

Postby robbie1234 on Thu, 15 Nov 2018 4:42 +0000

Hey guys firstly I hope im not breaking any rules.

I just bought a 2017 hilux sr5 auto with 40k on the clock.
I'm getting slightly worried at the fuel consumption at the moment.
The car only has a bullbar and isn't towing anything and im sitting on 14.5l/100km
I filled it up and it said around 630kms remaining and I've down probably 150 km and im down to 390ish kms...

its a Melbourne summer but hasn't been do hot so maybe aircon on 50% of the time and most driving is urban.

Any ideas?

Should I get it looked at, apparently its still under warranty. At this rate ill be getting under 400km per tank

That seems seriously high, I have a 2016 single cab manual with a bullbar and am getting 8.4 around town. Currently at 30k, it started out around 9l/100km and has got better as it beds in.

Mine runs 11.5 dragging a few hundred kilos of tools around town. Only 4.5k on the clock though.

Try resetting the fuel consumption and check again after a few hundred km. I'd recommend to check it with the real consumption from the tank capacity.

We are getting 8/100 to 10/100 (off road usage) on ours and are running the AdBlue model (yeah, EU regulations...), 38k on odometer and loading bay has 300KGs with tools and gear constantly. The consumption you are getting is really not what it should be.
