Gen 8 - Winch installation

Postby deeman111 on Tue, 19 Apr 2016 2:26 +0000

Hi guys,

First off dont hate on me too much, but i have a Fortuner. You guys seem to have a lot of info on the Hilux that carries straight over to the family wagons as they share the same chassis/driveline/front interior

So anyway, i have the Fortuner with a Toyota genuine alloy winch bar and lots of other bits n pieces (2nd battery, solar, led lights etc). Now i couldnt justify the $3800 i was quoted for the Toyota/Warn winch. So as im a weekend warrior i went and bought a Domin8r 12,000lb winch. Upon install i noticed that the winch crossmember will only allow the winch to be installed so the rope comes from over the top of the drum. Everything i have read online mentions that the winch rope should always come from under the drum.

- Nows the time to mention that i havent re-wound the rope the opposite way, just simply mounted the winch "upside down" eg so the motor is on the passenger side instead of driver side, which enables the rope to come over the top.

So has anyone else got a winch installed and can show photos of their setup? The winch works well how it is, but its always been in the back of my mind that maybe its all on incorrectly.

Anyway thanks for any help you can give
James

Title edited for clarity...

Welcome James.

What you have done is a common thing, especially in the cough cough Patrol world, it doesn't matter. The only thing to consider is now all the drain holes and plugs etc are now at the top and unless you're on your roof don't allow the winch to drain so well should any water get in there.
Cheers Rod

Definitely check motor drain hole at the bottom is clear and the other 3 (top and 2 sides) are capped or siliconed when changing the orientation of the motor. I learned this the hard way.

motor housing is ip67 rated so i would imagine there isnt a drain hole. ill slide under the car at some stage to check though

Hey Deeman111, hoping your still floating around and lurking!

I am in the same boat as you, factory alloy winch bar, have to flip the winch so it is overwound. Where did you mount your control box? I'm thinking on the right hand side of the bar near where the control box bracket thingo is on the factory bar, it would look ok there, but any other ooptions form anyone would be great.

Cheers,

Dion
