Looking to buy new. Auto or manual? Thoughts?

Postby roli on Sat, 16 Apr 2016 3:15 +0000

Hey everyone,

I test drove an auto SR5 dual cab today. Really liked it. Felt comfy to drive and quite a solid vehicle. I wanted to drive the manual but unfortunately the dealership didn't have any on the lot available to drive  I definitely know I want a manual. Having an auto would be convenient for my wife so we could share the driving but i'd prefer a manual. The auto seemed smooth.... however during the test drive it did go searching for gears for no real reason other than a slight rise in the road.
My questions are, do I go for convenience and get the auto or go for the manual because I know I'll enjoy it more and chances are it will be more fuel efficient. Is it really worth 60k?? I guess my feeling is that it's alot of cash to lay down. When I do buy one it will be a vehicle I will have until hopefully forever. (I've owned my current car (Mitsy Lancer) for 14 years now so that gives you an idea of what I mean when I say forever)

Cheers

I went with the auto in my new one.
Had an ss ute before that in manual. Just got sick of it when not trying to have some fun. This way the mrs can drive it too. I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or not. Loving it so far and the auto is nice and smooth.

Auto in sand and snow are more fun than a manual. Pulling a trailer with a auto are more comfy. And your left leg can rest to u try walking.. ;)

Hey Mate, Welcome to the site, and to add my 2 bobs worth on your post Auto or manual.
I have ordered a 2016 model SR Extra Cab 4x4 and they only come in manual, so easy decision for me.
( pick it up on the 21-04-2016).
My wife reckons the clutch is much lighter than our old V6 2003 Extra Cab and says she shouldn't have a problem with it.
Another point to look at is : what does it cost to replace a clutch in a manual compared to the cost of replacing/repairing an auto box. The manual wins hands down.
Although I must admit that on the beach the auto's really shine, just point and go, but with a manual you have to drive the thing, and I think that's half the fun..
Cheers mate..

I've always had manuals (xd falcon station wagon and hilux ute 2wd manual) 99-11, But i drive in melbourne traffic for three hours a day now.
I enjoy wheeling and did billygoats three weeks ago in a day trip from melbourne (up only).

Auto all the way.

I have a 2010 SR auto, have it listed for sale, will order a new SR auto next week both Dual cabs. Auto only way to go, manual is to high in first for towing and have to slightly ride the clutch to get mobile. New dual cab wont be available till mid to late May.

The hardest thing about owning an auto 4x4 is telling your parents you are gay.
Manual cars are for drivers.

Thank you all for your replies! Still undecided until I test drive the manual but in saying that, I'm still leaning towards the manual. I have been out bush with my brother's Cruiser and I reckon there's just a bit more control in the manual than an auto when it comes to getting through the rough stuff, in my opinion. But again, each to their own.

Cheers :)

Mate, believe me when I tell you, the manual is a pleasure to drive. Just clocked 10,000km in my sr5. The IMT makes the manaul amazing. Clutch is perfect. 6 speed for economy. I get 7.7lt/100 around town and I don't even pay for fuel. Went to robe / beachport (sand dunes, soft beach sand) and coupled with the 1gd the manual was perfect. With these Utes feeling more and more car like it still gives you a sense of you still need to drive the bastard!

Get the best of both buy 2 (his and hers)
If your ording, order a manual with auto ratio diff, will save you a bit down the line if you plane to run 32's as many do, or if you plane to do a bit of towing/ drive round loaded with more weight
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

Auto adds weight, so costs more in fuel over the 'lifetime' of the vehicle.

But, I know from years of experience originally watching drivers and then having a go myself that autos are much faster to change down than a manual.

My 2cs worth.

Have to drive a manual hino for work and that will be an auto when we trade it for a new one in a few years

Sounds like you really like manuals so just get what you really want

Hi,

I'll add my feedback. I had a manual SV6 holden ute that was really hard to drive. I went for a test drive at Toyota. I initially said I wanted to test both the manual and auto. The manual was the first drive and within minutes I just knew it was what I wanted. Effortless to change gears and the iMT function in the SR5 is great. I rarely get into 6th gear unless over 100km speed. We arrived back at the dealership and I said dont worry about the auto.
