I would guess all these similar experiences would mean thee is no actual fault with the car.
It is probly designed that way as all the manufacturers have different ways of making sure the common rail diesel don't run out of fuel, some go into limp mode, Toyota have just chosen to leave a large amount in the tank when on empty. So taking back to the dealer to find a fault will result in nothing other than a report back to hq and they will see a lot of people have the same perception of how expect it to work.
But the car will still work the same as it is designed

Just tried it again. Drove 80km past the fuel light. 600km total range, mixed hwy city + towing and could only fill 65l.

Economy not bad considering, bit under 11 per 100.

Will push further next time.

The fuel economy on my sr dual cab auto is disappointing. I never see under 10.2 even if I try and that a very good mix of suburban and highway driving. From what I can gather, it seems my dpf is doing it burn very frequently - I have the snorkel so u "know" when the dpf is doing its thing. It raises cruising fuel economy through the roof, 60km/h cruise usually sees 4-5.5lt - when the dpf is doing its thing this raises to 14-15 with out hardly touching the throttle.

It would seem the manuals are getting the economy where the autos are struggling? Hopefully Toyota might have an update soon?? I had a 2013 SR5 v6 manual which on avg used 11.5, I bought the diesel thinking it would lower my consumption down a bit - how wrong I was!!

yeah im not really impressed with all of this diesel economy hype myself. i average around 8.1-9.2 l/100 on my 2012 sr5 manual and that's with light foot driving. the best i got was 8.3l/100 and that was sitting on roughly 95-99km on speed cruise control from kwinana - albany...yeah i know...was a slow trip. but on the way back home, i sat on 110-115 kph and it sucked the juice quite noticeably and average 9.6 - 10 l/100 @ 2300-2500 rpm

personally i doubt if ill go down the diesel route again, personally im tired of the clanky noisy engine and might go for a quiet more pick up and go petrol version next time

I could not be happier with the new Hilux 2.8 I had a 4.5L petrol Landcruiser auto which was doing good if I could 25/100. I drove 400K in the poring rain yesterday sitting on 115km/h and returned 9.1/100 mine is a manual.

Yep you hit the nail on the head...you have a manual Rickoo5..It seems the manuals are getting the economy where the autos are suffering for some reason? It would seem a lot have complained to Toyota about it so hopefully maybe they will revise / update the fuel maps and auto mapping to be better!!

It does take a bit more effort to turn over these autos, they aren't small autos by any means...it certainly will use more fuel.

I've just knocked up 1500km in my 2016 sr5 twin cab hilux. Drove down the Hume for the first time this weekend on cruise. It hates staying in 6th. Switches from 6th to 5th heaps.. Actually spent most of its time in 5th.
Switched over to the selective gearing side only to have the car decide to change its own gears back to 5th.. Pointless having a selective gearing if the car just changes its own gearing anyway.
Not wrapt with my decision to go auto.. Wish I had enough got a manual..

I can't get over how well the manual pulls in 6th. I don't use 6th at all when towing the caravan.

5th is also an overdrive gear...perhaps not a great idea towing in 5th either.

The selector only lets you select the gear range... ie: if you select S4 it will change from 1-4 as it pleases. Its not like a "tip-tronic" box where it changes up and down as you tell it to.

I think the Auto gearboxes whilst are really efficient after 60km/h really struggle with torque transfer below 45km/h - no matter what engine RPM.

You guys don't have this issue with Manual.

The key to achieving good economy using the Auto is to keep an eye on the instant fuel consumption - so realise that you will burn instant 50-70l/100km from 0-40km/h on hard acceleration. This burn rate will destroy your fuel economy reading.

So what you'd do is put your foot down gently on take off, knowing that for a turbo engine, you'll get a bit of turbo lag in addition to lower torque transfer efficiencies at slow vehicle speeds in Auto; keeping instant fuel consumption around 15L/100km till you get to your desired speed limit. You'll see you acceleration will increase as vehicle speed picks up when the auto box becomes more efficient at higher speeds.

with this method you'll return about 7.7L/100km.

Nice, which is just about right, 7.6L/100km on a 80L tank should give you 1000km range. You've done 850km and it's got just about the right reserve to get you to above 1000km.

Worked out that 65km/h gives best economy with the Auto. That's when overdrive gear is engaged on straight and level roads.

And above 80km/h, drag from air friction increases significantly - unless the body is shaped like a ferrari.

I have a manual extra cab with 2700 on the clock and I'm currently getting 8.1L /100 K mostly short runs and not much highway .

That's pretty good. Im currently getting 10.2 combined highway + city. I do have a fair bit of weight on though (BB / steps / canopy / winch). Pretty similar to my old one, however this one is auto.

My old man has just done 686kms before refuel with 22kms remaining on the dash. It is a 4x2 single cab 2.8 sr. He managed to put in 59L and that's to the full mark.
So he had 21L remaining in there which could do well over 850 Kms as it's averaging 8.6L/100

After reading up about others getting 60L (yes old mans is a tiny 4x2 and a lot of weight difference) in on average once it's saying to refuel I thought I'd call the dealership and they said that it's set up that way so it doesn't run bone dry as these engines don't like to be ran with small capacity in the tank.... That's a hell lot of a fuel remaining in there when it's telling you it's time to fuel and it's a bit too extreme. It's just too confusing lol

All in all what they say it should do as per their calculation with 80L it's well and truly on the money there which is a average of 870kms.
