New engine at 90,000 km's!

General discussion of basically anything related to the 2015> Hilux

It does seem a bit like jumping to conclusions. Every manufacturer has a few items that are a bit of a lemon that get past quality control.

To say all 2.8L engines are no good is like something I would expect to see on News.com.au

Nobody saying they're no good, just that there may be a weakness, and the weakest link in the chain is the one which fails. Putting a chip on only makes the weak link more vulnerable. Do you understand what a chip does? More fuel which means more heat which is more stress is what it does.
You asked for advice and you got it, don't shoot the messenger just because you don't like the message. Yes I have a chip on my Hilux but it's a calculated risk I'm willing to take. Are you? Sounds like you made your choice and now trying to justify it.

I dont really care who said what really.

I just wanna know why these engines are so bad, they sell like hotcakes at the moment, Toyota will be up for millions in repairs if they were as dodgy as indicated...With or without a chip.

Specwarop, where did anyone say these engines are no good?
They sell like "hotcakes" because Hilux has a very long and solid reputation!

Manufacturers have often dodged their responsibility over warranties including Toyota. Grunf I would have thought you of all people would know about Toyota dodging responsibility.

Keep watching this space and see if Toyota can ever get the dpf fixed!

Number of people have mentioned weaknesses, or major issues above with the motor.

True, no claims of "bad engines" though. Let's see what news.com say about Toyota if/when someone like the original poster gets a cracked piston 2 years out of warranty! The dpf issue is still running hot with Toyota and others so let's see where it goes from here. Grunf and the OP have mentioned unsatisfactory service from Toyota over dpf issues. I don't expect Toyota will be buying back cars which have failed with known issues in the future.

Specwarop, if you haven't bought a gen8 yet I might suggest that you look at a latest version of SR5 with a V6 engine and supercharge it. Not being sarcastic but I wish I had done this instead of my kun26 which could do with some extra power. The gen8 has not really been proven yet so I personally wouldn't buy one even though I am a Toyota man and have 3 at present, after 50+ years of Toyota vehicles. Maybe talk to HK1836 about his experience.

Or just get Isuzu.
The only car size engine that is B10 rated. (Expected to run 500,000 kms trouble free).

I would imagine Toyota is keeping fingers and toes crossed hoping that the current batch of gen8 make it out of warranty before they see multiple problems with the current engines. Bet there's a revised piston in the next batch! Although there are still problems with the 1kd I bought mine long after they were released, expecting that all the issues were solved (obviously in vane).

When did you buy yours Gipsy? What model year?

They revised the piston? Did Toyota release this information somewhere?

No. We only have an anecdotal internet report that the pistons are “made of rubbish” and “break and wreck the engine”. Nil further details. Allegedly from an internal Toyota bulletin.

To be taken with a bucket of salt.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes ggreenie, your a bit sceptical, Toyota don't readily release bulletins about anything lest their reputation may suffer, hoping no-one will notice until they have a problem. See how long the airbag fiasco went on for?

My Hilux was built December 2012 and plated January 2013. Not sure which models got revised pistons but hoping mine are the better ones

I think I have some info somewhere, I'll post it up.

Edit: I have a Toyota service bulletin which details 2014 the changed piston was implemented and the euro 5 version from manufacture onwards. Mine, and I think most kun26 are euro4 except possibly the last of 2014 in Australia

Right! So the issue about potential cracked pistons is still the point... Chip or no chip!

That was 2014 euro4 was given revised pistons and all euro5 and it looks like the injector was revised from 2009

The service bulletin is EG-008T-0112. 18/09/2014

Specwarop here's another write up about it:

The new engines are Euro 5 arent they, your recent link provided Gypsy indicates the issue 'may' be resolved.

If it comes to that, why not. Second hand, reconed or new, whatever the circumstances are at the time, not fussed about it too much.
But I change my cars every 3 to 4 years anyway ...

As far as I know there were no euro5 kun26 imports into Australia. The first euro5 had a dpf and it was the current gen8 series as far as I know. Unless there are a couple of gen7 examples with dpf (which I doubt exist) then euro5 was gen8

The link refers to a different engine altogether. Don’t pay it any attention.
