Spanner sizes - oil change

Postby Nealm on Sat, 19 Apr 2025 1:28 +0000

Hi, a pretty basic question (sorry) but I can’t find the information elsewhere. I plan on doing an oil change while travelling (remotely) and forgot to bring a socket set. I’ll pick up some cheap ring scanners on the go. Can anyone confirm the size of spanner needed for the sump plug? I recall the bash plate bolts are 12mm (?) but can’t remember the sump plug. And will I have trouble getting the bash plate off with a ring spanner? Again I’ve forgotten whether any of these are recessed and require a socket. I’ll probably have difficulty getting the oil filter off just with my hands and if so I’ll just do the oil. Thanks in advance for any assistance offered!!

Mines' a 2004 model, and so yours might be different, have a look. On mine the sump plug sits behind the back of the bash plate. I don't have to remove the bash plate for an oil change.
The other thing that crossed my mind is that if you have to buy a spanner, chances are you'll be able to buy an oil filter remover in the same store. My preference is the seat belt and 3/4 box section type.
