Diff lock in 4wd high

Postby jakepivac on Sun, 08 Aug 2021 3:44 +0000

2019 Hilux (cruiser mode)
Does anybody know how to engage the diff lock in 4wd high instead of just low?
Is there a wire you can bridge or tap so that it would work in high?
I understand you’d have to turn off traction control etc but just feel a little more speed with the diff lock may help prevent getting stuck.

Auto transmission

Cheers

Hey Jake.
I 4x4 often and my luxy is set up for offroad tracks.
Mate, I can't imagine a scenario where you would want to put a locker on at speed. I'd highly recommend you don't do this mod, thats a disaster waiting to happen.

High speed with diff locks = exploding diff’s.

Do you mean engage the locker whilst at a high speed or engage the locker when stopped but drive up to and along at high speeds.

Hi Tony, sorry if I worded that wrong. What I mean is, sometimes when going up a slippery slope momentum helps a lot. Low ratio can be a little slow. Diff lock only works in low ratio, is there a way to have it activated in high ratio. No I’m not going to be trying to put it in diff lock while driving fast (don’t think it can go in while moving) and no I won’t be trying to drive 100km while in diff lock. Only trying to have a little more speed to get the momentum up a little to assist with the above scenario, or maybe even that really soft piece of sand at the beach etc.

Regards

I note you have an Auto, what about using sports shift manually to select a higher gear in low range? Once you are rolling I would expect you can manually change up?
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

You can select a gear however it only means that it the top gear if that makes sense. If I put it in 2nd it will still start in 1st until speed of second is reached so no that won’t help

Hey jake. I didn't even think about when you would engage the locker, my worry was having the locker on at speed, its not like a welded diff. Low gear S4 will go quick enough for almost any 4x4 situation.
I love lockers. My hilux is twin e-locked which has transformed the car from a pretty good 4WD to a very good 4WD.
You engage and disengage the locker/s when you are pretty much stationary and then move slowly forward whilst moving your steering wheel around. It usually takes a couple of seconds.
