Rough ride

Postby RedLux97 on Mon, 13 Apr 2020 6:56 +0000

Hi
I have a 2019 sr5 4x4 auto with Toyota steel bar and side rails.
I have 17k on the clock and I find the ride quite rough. I think the bar weight at the front has dropped the front suspension and raised the back suspension so it is very jittery.
Does anyone have any ideas to fix this at a cheap cost? (Spacers for front) etc
I have spoken to ARB and they want to charge $2500 for new suspension all round????
Thanks in advance

First thing you need to do is check your tyre pressure. If they’re on much more than about 35psi they’re probably too hard. Tyre shops etc like to pump them up to 50psi and higher.

You don't mention carrying any weight on the rear? The vehicle is designed to carry load and the suspension tuned accordingly, it's firm. If you are light in the back it will seem jittery.

And yes, the weight of a steel bar over the front will also lift a corresponding amount at the rear make it even lighter on the rear spring. Toyota have alternative OE springs for the front for carrying the additional weight of a bar & winch but that's not going to help with rear spring & damper rates.

ARB suspensions for the Gen 8 generally have softer spring rates than OE and options to match different loads.

$2000 for Ultimate Suspension on my 2011 was the best money I spent on it. Turned a pig into a princess in terms of ride. My front springs were shot by the time it was 3 years old due to a steel bar. It has heavy fronts and soft rears. It is like chalk and cheese, the difference in ride was unbelievable.

FYI Toyota recommended pressures front & rear stock tyres at minimum load is 200bar/29psi. Confirmed at these pressures flat across tread, going higher will start to bow out and wear centres and reduce straight line traction.

Hmmmmmm .... ;) , gents tyre pressure also depends on tyre bands and type.

Regular tyre will not be same shape at 29psi compared to AT Light Truck or MT tyre etc

I'm sure there are numerous threads on tyre pressures.
I might be wrong.

Give the lads at Superior Engineering a call and they will give you good advice on the springs you need to fit
I had great results on mine after telling them my set up, they are really helpful and great value for money

Indeed, the benchmark above is for gen 8 stock/OEM.

Indeed mate, there are also even more threads on car suspension.

All I can say on this is be very careful on what you spend your money on and wherever you end up. Make sure they know what they are talking about and do your research. If you know more then the salesman your talking to chances are they are selling not supporting you.

Did arb say it was a 2inch lift because it’s really only 30mm front ?

2500 east coast is a pretty standard number. For a full upgrade at a light load including labour and wheel alignment.

If that number seems expensive then you won’t like my next option.

ARBs BP51’s have come a long way since the originals and there adjustability is what makes them amazing for a versatile set up.

I have had them for about 30,000 km now and love them.
Like you I have most of my weight up front but when I’m out and about I’m loaded to GVM or even more to be honest. So I actually run a constant 300kg spring on rear with only a canopy and long range tank back there. So nowhere near that number.
This is where the bp come in. I run them really light when unloaded and then stiffen them up when full of gear.
But expect a number around 5000-5500 installed fair warning.

Back to the most likely problem is simply tires.
Air pressure and those 18” stock rims on the SR5 and up make for a rougher ride for most.
I dropped to a 16” rim and a modest muddy of just under 32” and still have the road tires. You certainly notice the difference when you swap back and forth between them.
