Took mine to Toyota today but they are good for f:u)k all so I will pull it apart myself tomorrow give it a squirt with wd40 and a clean up

You may need some new solonoids to be able to get it working again. Not sure where to get those from but if anyone else reading this knows please post.

Yeh I'm asuming my ones will be ok just got a little wet because it still works nearly all the Time just want to make sure. And it would not hurt to get in and have a look at it all.

How bad were yours?

the copper contacts in mine where green with corrosion, which i cleaned up and greased.. but as everyone else with this problem, the truck would only start intermittently.. it was the luck of the draw whether it'd start some days..

Here is a YouTube vid on how to replace starter clutch. Not sure if it's the same model as Hilux but they all will be pretty similar. It's defiantly a denso/toyota

Good morning all, had a start issue this morning that has me scratching my head somewhat.
Turn key, glowplug light on then off, turn to start...rrr...then nothing, thinking hmmm crank battery dead
try again

3rd times a charm
turn key, glowplug light on then off, turn to start....and it starts!!!!
I've never had a vehicle with what I thought was a dead battery improve on the 3rd crank and start.....
So where should I be looking?

Been in any crap lately? Mine will do that about a week or two after I've been in muddy water. Check your starter solenoid, might have dirty/corroded terminals. Or could just be a dodgy battery terminal [WINKING FACE].

Yes, I have been though some puddles lately (about 2 weeks ago) and a couple of unintended puddles on Saturday arvo....will have a look around the solenoid....cheers

OK...I'm going to ask the dumb question...which solenoid is it?

The one on the starter motor, easier to drop the starter off to do it properly. I gather it is an earlier model if it has a glow sequence? The earlier models were much easier to remove the starter. Don't forget step one, disconnect the battery.

Don't forget the easiest first step... Check the battery terminals, they do that in winter, disconnect both terminals and spray with wd40 then see if that fixed it. While you have the wd40 in your hand spray liberal quantity of it all over the starter motor.

One would assume that has already been done, if he hasn't thought to do that then I would not recommend proceeding any further, get it looked at by a professional.

Cheers all....was better this morning...it had a bit of a think and then started...definitely not 100% so looks like starter motor has to come out for a "service"....seems to not like cold mornings, rest of the day is no problem!!

Mine does the same but it will get worse quickly! The solenoid contacts will rapidly get more corroded and burnt. If ya get to it early ya can just give them a file to clean them up like new.

So what's the trick to get the bottom bolt out of the starter motor...I reckon I'm just about to throw a match at the car! Can turn the whole bolt assy with breaker bar...can't for the life of me get the fkn nut to move!
