Clutches for the diesel starters are no problem at all. I carry them in stock as I don't rebuild a diesel starter without a new one

I had 07 D4D Cab/Chas and the starter moter started to grind at 60,000k replaced under warranty, I then back traded to an 06 Dual Cab SR5 D4D with many options with 70,000k. At 102,000k last week the grinding of the starter motor on this D4D started. I need the vehicle for work the local Auto Elec said it was repairable, but suggested a new one with 3 years warranty. The cost would be less to repair, but i needed the vehilce. He replaced it whilst I was at a funeral. $539 country NSW. 3 YR WARRANTY.
An I just unlucky.

OK sounding familar i'm in the same boat as ba057 as of today my starter is also grinding - doesn't seem to mesh properly on start up. It starts fine other then for the grinding so don't think its the electrical connections like other guys on the forum have had problems with.

Mine is a 06 with 85000ks on it do i bother to pull it out & clean it up or as its grinding go straight for the replacement, just like everone else has done water crossings, mud, corrigated dirt roads etc.

It can be repairer. Usually the clutch inside the starter is failing. Every Toyota diesel starter I fix gets a new clutch as they are common failure with high compression of the engine. Water crossings will shorten the life of it too

I'm pretty sure that my starter motor just gave out. I go to turn the car on and it just ticks. does that sound like the starter motor? If so im going to take it out tomorrow and have a look at it.

It could be your battery but more than likely dirty starter terminals. A number of us have suffered the same problem. Steve9r did a thread on it a while back showing how to clean up the contacts.

Give your starter motor a solid tap, the solenoid that pulls in can get stuck.

Took the starter motor out yesterday and took it down to my auto electrician and he said it needs replacing as the interior was extremely corroded. He said he could try and clean and replace some parts but said it could fail again in a few months do he put in an order for a new one. He said he would get me one at cost price which is great. Should be in on monday

Starter Motor Went

Last week my starter motor shat itself. Mine is a 2007 Hilux SR5 with only 114K on the clock. A genuine replacement starter motor is ordinarily $868 plus labour. Canberra Toyota put it on Toyota Australia for an after warranty job which was declined. Was impressed with Canberra Toyota when they only charged me $415 for the starter (brand new - not re-conditioned) and only $90 labour. I continue to get outstanding service from Canberra Toyota - Belconnen Branch.

Has anyone else had starter motor issues?

Cheers,

Matt

Mine died up the cape. Got a genuine replacement in Weipa for $400 odd which I was really impressed about considering where I was. Mine had roughly the same km's as yours.

Good to hear you got good service from Toyota. It seems a rare thing..

Cheers,

Chris.

My starter clutch shat itself 3 weeks ago, toyota wanted $900 no ifs or buts with $200 labour. Repco wanted $500 for new starter, ended up getting the local auto leccy to clean it out and replace clutch for $250
Rig has 135,000km on her

btw he said it was full of mud
