Fitting factory towbar wiring harness

Hi guys, there 3 way I fit them.
1- Toyota instruction way ( normally I ask the customer if they will get a dual batt system and if not then use this way I.e. official way.)
2 -relay box next to batt, wiring that goes via exhaust run it via inside left chassi rail then to plug harnes
3 - ( the way I done it) at batt with a fuse, run a 3mm gas shield single core wire inside left chassi rail to the end of rear chassi ( where th 2 bolts for the side bracket runs) and power up relay box then connect to plug harness.
Now since I some times do water crossings I've taken out the relays off the black toyota box and got a water proof electrical box ( jaycar or Altronics) and rewired it.... Sadly I didn't take pics BUT if interested pm me for pics.

Hope It helps

"Edit"

With option 3 , later i ran a 6mm single core gas shield wire, 'cos then I've also placed in the rear of the tub ( behind) left tail light a dual acc cig socket.

Hi Guys,

hoping someone can help me troubleshoot some problems with my towbar wiring... Went to tow something with the lux for the first time today, plugged in the boat trailer connector and go no lights, turn signals or anything...

So i've pulled the plug apart and tested the wires with a multi meter, I get a constant 12V out of the brown wire, and nothing out of any of the others (other than white being earth)

I then traced the wiring up to a little black box that was sitting in the LH chassis rail which had 2 wiring plugs in it, some of which have the same colour wires, so i'm assuming this is some type of relay box for the trailer wiring...? anyway I disconnected the plugs and tested the terminals and got a voltage reading on all connectors on the battery side plug, and then tested for continuity on the trailer side and all wires seem fine...

The two wiring plugs

so the problem appeared to be in the black box, I opened it up and checked the circuit and found below;

Looks to me as if the top left corner is the buggered part?

So should this be a simple case of getting a replacement part from toyota? or something else I will need to get?

Also every trailer pin wiring diagram I can find for a 7 pin connector mentions a black wire...which I don't appear to have! is this normal or am I missing something? Only got Brown, White, Yellow, Green, Red

Thanks for your help!

Yea mate you will need a new tow ecu.

It is common that that get water damaged.

That ecu is required for your tow plugs so no extra Electeicial load is put through your vehicle harness and integration relays.

Black is the reversing signal.
So I guess you do not really need it.
The last one I changed was like 110 bucks.

Bust check. Sometimes you can buy a compleat new wiring harness cheaper then just the ecu.

Hope I have helped.

Well just got back from Toyota. He said he has never seen that box before, and the genuine harness doesn't have a module that matches the plug inputs on the box I have... So looks like this has non genuine parts! Went down the the local towbar place and they said they can supply/install a aftermarket solution for about $130 ($90 of which is parts)

So I'm going to have a quick search and see if I can find where the part came from, if not probably go down that route.

Thanks for the help boxhead!!

Hey guys,

I recently got a dual battery fitted to my 12/13 hilux anyway as you all know the relay module had to be moved. it was all re routed to the drivers side of the ute. Anyway the indicators no longer work, so i diagnosed the problem that the power wasn't connected to the relay box. so the red wire that runs out of the relay box does it go straight to the positive terminal on the cranking battery or does it need fusing or get routed to something else??

Straight to positive as the fuse is in the relay box

Anyone noticed that when locking and unlocking your car now you get a second blinker click from the relay
Box?

That is what those relays are for. Because the indicator flasher relay is Electrically controlled toyota fitted the extra blinker relays left and right in that box. So extra indicator lights for mine and escort vehicles would not interfere with the flash rate and load on the blinker electrics.

Is that what you meant ?

For those with a '97 - 04' ute or tray and you don't need braked towing, the part numbers needed are PZQ61-89010 for 7 pin flat, PZQ61-8920 for 7 pin small round and PZQ61-89030 for the 7 pin large round. The harness comes with bare ends and Toyota suggests hard-wiring into before the LH/RH splice on the tail light wiring loom. The blue wire for powered brakes is optional as mention in previous posts.

I spent the better part of the last month trying to find these part numbers happy to share here.

I recently bought a second hand towbar PZQ64-89025 for my 2WD. The 4WD version is PZQ64-89040. Both use the PZQ63-89040 tongue.

Hope this helps anyone doing a search like I was.

I did the install of the OEM wiring harness last night, what a PITA. It took a while to interpret the instructions as it ran down the frame, especially the around the parking brake cables, brake cable heat shield, and rear shock. All in all, it's a job better left done at the dealership in my opinion, especially if it only takes them 60 minutes to complete the job. It was a nice DIY project, just a bit time consuming. Some of the pics posted in this thread at at odds with the factory instructions, but I guess as long as it works and the cables don't melt on the exhaust or bind in the parking brake cables it's all good right?

Hi All,
I have just installed the factory towbar wiring kit and just wish to confirm how you fella's ran the loom around the rear right hand side shock?
If anyone could post a picture it would be very much appreciated.
Cheers.

this is weird. i heard that it would be ok to not fit loom if your trailer has LED lights, unsure how true this is but ive had no issues.

I had my wiring as per the Toyota instructions. My rear axle came up and crushed the wiring.
Don't have your wiring as per the toyota instructions in the segments where it has it running along a potential pinch point to avoid this drama.
I'm going to move my connection plug up high to stop it getting full of mud at the next opportunity as well.
