I put the remote head in the ashtray slot and the main unit above the glove box so as not to get wet in case of some flooding and just put the mic in the compartment beside the radio. Very neat and no extra holes and screws in the dash.

uhf in ash tray slot

Postby Earl-mi on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 7:09 +0000

Hi guys.

Thinking about mounting my UHF in the ash tray swell. But wanting to know.

How does the speaker sound? Very muffled being in such a tight space behind the dash?

Mines in the ash tray and sounds clear (now the arial is fixed), only have it turned up about half way, definately loud and clear enough.

Thanks mitch

I have fitted at over the week end. Worked like a charm. Clear and i mounted the speaker facing upwards. I used double sided tape to hold it down.

I have to cut out a small piece of the plastic from the rear of the opening so the cable could fit and the unit sit flat.

thanks

Old thread I know but I have just mounted mine, perfect spot!! I mounted with the speaker up and it is loud enough, it actually seems to come out from behind the head unit and through the air vents. It's the perfect spot for my TX3100 and only took about 10 minutes to get the dash apart enough to remove the tray.

Yep old thread, sorry people.

For the life of me I'm going out of my mind trying to get the ashtray holder out. I've managed to remove the bottom screws holding the ashtray holder in (as well as the other two screws) but there are two tabs on the holder that without cutting them off, I can't see a way to get this out without raging on the dash.

Any assistance/pics would be appreciated.

Cheers

Have ya got the dark grey section of dash that surrounds the top of the ash tray pulled up? Once you pull the trim off around the stereo and air con knobs there are a couple of screws behind there that allow you to unclil that lower section. Ya just have to give it a good pull once the screws are out.

Mine faces up, but it depends on how much the speaker is covered. If your install method covers the speaker, then try flipping the unit.

Hey guys,
first time ever on this site and I have already got so many great ideas. has anyone made a mould/bracket that goes around their GME radio so it looks like its built into the dash for a more cleaner finish? if so i would love to see some pictures or even some ideas of what to use to make it. thanks

Hi all, does anyone have any quick dimensions of what'll fit and what won't in the ashtray slot? Thinking about an ICOM IC-450/IC410-PRO and mounting it in there though compared to the TX3100/TX3120, it's much larger.

Cheers for any advice.

Ic410 is nearly DIN wide so that won't fit without cutting into the dash and the 450 is remote mic version so really pointless putting in there when it can hide under the dash or a seat with a mic extension or if you're tight some cat 5 scraps.

Cheers mate, I made a paper template of the 450 and tried under the centre console area but even there seems quite tight...looks like I've got my eye on one of the largest units out there.

I've got a remote head IC207 and remote FT857, both radio torsos are under the seat as not enough room under the console. You could try a qyt kt8900D, tiny little Chinese dual band mobiles. Pretty much a Baofeng with a 30 watt PA strapped to it. $110 to $120 delivered to your door.

Bumping old thread, I’m planning on mounting a tx3100 in the ash tray as others have done, it looks like in some of the photos on this thread that people have left the ash tray slides in there, whereas in some other pictures it looks like people have taken the entire ash tray unit out and you can see into the dash around the uhf, what is the tidiest? Thanks
