Turbo timers & cruise control

Postby Seaair on Wed, 02 May 2007 8:39 +0000

Is anyone out there who can assist in relation to the following:
# Is a turbo timer necessary?
# If so, which is the best / reliable brand
# If not what time do you leave the D4D idling after a 110km/hr trip?

As to cruise control (which should have been standard for the price we all have paid for these Luxs), which is thes the most reliable brand.

Thanks

Turbo timers & cruise control

Hello Seaair,

In my opinion....

Point One - No a timer is not necessary

Point Two - See Point One above.

Point Three - I would leave mine running for no longer than two minutes and only do that after a trip on the highway of more than about 20min or under severe load, i.e towing etc. on a hot day. Others may have different opinions.

As for cruise control, would love one but can't justify the moola to fit one.....

Regards,

Turbo timers & cruise control

Postby TOMUCH on Thu, 03 May 2007 5:00 +0000

Seaair, I have an Auscruise Cruise Control fitted to TOMUCH... It was $850 fitted and is fly by wire technology.. one of the best things I have fitted... absolutly prefect for touring... as for the turbo timer, I don't have one fitted and on a factory ftted turbo you should not need to... However, if you have been lugging the engine or putting it under more load (towing, big hills ect...) than I would idle down for a min or two depending on the severity of your driving.. remember that the turbo boost is created by expansion of hot gas load and heat from the engine...not RPM... I would be keen to fit a pyrometer in order to keep an eye on exhaust gas temperature.... instead of a timer... Cheers TOMUCH

Turbo timers & cruise control

Postby Rich on Thu, 03 May 2007 5:17 +0000

In the user manual I think it quotes 2 Minutes after driving at 100Km/h. I think it also specifies a time after driving at 80 km/h, but can't remember what it is, maybe 40 Secs....

I have heard Turbo timers bypass your engine immobiliser and make your car easier to steal, don't know how true this is. I have been convinced that timers are not necessary but I do always let mine idle down.
Rich.

Yep Seaair,
Like TOMUCH said, Auscruise Cruise Control is the way to go, my work Lux has . . . I can't remember the brand name, but it is always messing up, it's a piece of . . . hmm . . YUK!. I've never had trouble with the Auscruise Cruise Control on my own vehicle.

Cheers

Turbo timers & cruise control

With regards to Turbo timers the oil and bearing technology nowdays is a long way better than 10 or 20 years ago when T timers were popular. the reason for leaving a turbo running was so the oil could circulate and cool down the turbo bearings after a heavy pull for extended periods. A pyro monitors exhaust gas temps and when you take your foot of the accelerator for any reason then the gas flow is less and generally the temp drops. Where I work we have them fitted on haulpac 320 tonne dump trucks and Cat 998 loaders and D11 dozers and most operators dont know what they are for so dont look at them They are ok to use but are not needed on the smaller high tech turbos of today, having said that if you have given the engine a bit of hard work it wouldn't hurt to leave it run for a minute or two but not essential IMHO. More important is to keep your oil and filters clean and use the correct grade of lubricants at regular intervals. Dont know about the Cruise control as my lux had it as standard.

I think that most of the high tech oils on the market are excellent and it is mainly a choice of price and personal preference for a brand. ie some people only like Shell, Caltex or Mobil . Make sure you use the correct grade and type for your operating conditions with a good quality filter. I think Delvac 1 is the oil for jap Turbo diesels

Hi Seaair & Tonym,

I know this is off your original thread heading. I use BP Vanellus C6 Global 15W-4D oil. Recommended by my Toyota dealer. Starting to wonder if this appropriate.

Cheers

The dealer where I get mne serviced uses Shell oils and lubs. There is nothing wrong with BP Vanellus. I think the dealers probably have deals with local suppliers arranged by a tender.

Well Doinit, I I guess it is simply a matter of opinion as long as you steer away from supermarket brands
