Great setup 2007Lux I plan to do the exact same. Im curious as to what continuous duty solenoid you've used? I wish to be able to connect both batteries for winching and engine starting if required. I know cranking draws more than 100amps and haven't been able to find a solenoid which can handle a higher current.

Hi Guys,

have seen a couple of mentions about the crappy ability of hilux alternator (petrol v6)

I am having a rather annoying issue currently where, if i have my spotties, highbeams , foggies, and DC-DC charger on (and the usual load of the car itself) ... my alternator is unable to keep up, and I start depleting my primary battery.

In the day time the issue is not there, the alternator can keep up .. infact even around city with low beams it's OK

But on a night drive (sitting at 2000rpm), she simply can't keep up. My DC-DC (redarc) actually removes itself from the equation when it detects low voltage (ie when the battery is nearly bloody flat) ... but even then the car has a hard time breaking even with the primary battery charge level, if i have all the candles lit on the bow.

Anyone had experiences with getting these factory alternators to boost some output?

One of my best mates is an auto sparky and even he's scratching his head (we're now toying wiht idea of having the alternator rebuilt and beefed up by him ... or purchasing an aftermarket 130amp alternator).

Surely though these hilux alternators can handle a bit of load ... a pair of spotties (lightforce blitz 240), and a DC-DC charger (draws probably 25amp, to deliver 20amp to aux batt) is not THAT big an ask?

Highbeams : 220watt / 18amps
Lightforce : 200watt /18amps
Foggies : 110watt / 9amps
Brake / Park Lights : 2.5amp
Running of the car (pumps, dashboards, aircon fans, computers) : ??? Anyone?
20amp DC-DC running, probably pulls closer to 25amp off alternator
This comes in at 72.5amps, NOT including the unknowns above (running of the car). Assuming maybe 15amp?

Total Coming in at around 88amps ... i guess I can see why alternator isn't keeping up.

But surely a pair of spotties, and a dual battery system is common as houses on our hiluxes (i see guys with 4 or more spotties!), yet this issue doesn't seem common place.

How do you get 220watts for the headlights??? It should be 120 on high beam. The alternator may be on the blink it should cover it. If you auto elec mate has a scope get I'm to check the dc ripple. Alternator has prob dropped a diode and will show up on a scope. This would explain why it would have poor output

110 watt per high beam no ? That's what the globe box said! 55/110 unless my memory mistaken

Yeh funny u say that today he texted saying exact that , that diode crashes on these alternators quite commonly

You should not run any higher wattage than the standard 55/60

The factory wiring and switches don't like it and neither do the polycarbonate lenses

Alternator

Postby BEN_SR on Sat, 26 Nov 2011 2:48 +0000

Hey Guys.

Looks like my alternator has gone on my TD 06 Hilux, and needs replacing. It makes a high pitch rattle noise every now and then and the battery volts drops to 12V (via the smart gauge). The battery dash light will also come on.

It will come back every now and then and go back to normal charging volts of 13.5V - 14V and the noise will go away.

I reckon it might be a bearing issue. I have also heard that these alternators have a clutch, which could be the issue (if it exists!).

My question is how hard is it to replace the alternator, and If I go along the line of a replacement what is the thoughts of upgrading to the 130A Bosch alternative?
What about a re-furbished option?

Has anyone here done this on the diesel? Did you upgrade the cabling?

Cheers,
Ben

Btw I've heard the td engines have a different alty (140amp??) to the v6

Td seems to be ballsy alty

V6 alty is limp and drops its guys at 60-70amps

My next step is an aftermarket 130amp

So options for dual alts on d4d
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

Has anyone got this 130A alternator in their V6 (if so how is it???), or does anyone know if its possible without too much trouble and cost to run 2 alternators???

Btw found the model of alty on v6 is 80amp max.

So less realistically (duty cycle)

I've learnt to manage my situ can't Ve bothered getting after market alty

After reading a bit on here I've learnt that the Hilux alternator is not capable of charging two batteries properly as it only charges untill the temperature rises in the engine bay, something to do with efficiency or polution. I have even seen comments suggesting it can't even charge the main battery properly. This seems a bit silly if it is true and battery life would be reduced wouldn't it? In regards to this, what sort of life are people getting out of their original batteries? Also I'm keen to get a dual system down the track, am I right in thinking if you get a set up with just an isolator, then you will need to periodically charge your batteries on a 240v charger because they will never get a proper charge? And will this set up shorten the life of the batteries? Hence why guys go for the DC charger set ups? Am I on nthe right track here guys?

I run a dc charger for aux battery mate only way to go

Alty with smart solenoid will
Only ever charge to about 70% and given 50-100% is the useable range that more than halves capacity

I have aux circuits (fridges , stereo deck, amps) wired off my deep cycle only (starter is never touched)

Dc charger still draws power from alty of course but delivers much better charging

I throw the ac 7stagw charger on when I have that option (when needed)

I even throw ac charger on my starter from time to time just to get it back up 100%

Smart solenoids are old school and less Effective and at mercy of the alternators charging algorithm which in modern cars gets tricky

Dc charger (and having aux stuff on separate circuits rather than hanging off both) gives more run time , better batt life (because it takes it to proper 100% charge) and basically leaves your starter batt out of the equation altogether

Mad not to do it if you're starting fresh

How to you put the dc charger on your starter batt, is there a switch or something?
