Engine Problem 09 Hilux

Hi Everyone,

My SR5 has developed a problem, the check engine light has come on and the engine will only rev to 2500rpm and very slowely. The turbo seems to be spooling slowely and at about 2000rpm it 'pulses' Restarting the car does not help and neither does disconecting the battery for a while. Engine still runs smoothly.

I'm going to drive the car to the dealer on Monday which i'm not looking forward to 80km @ 40km/hr yeeha.

Is there any way to check for codes to give me an idea to what to look at. Perhaps a plug is loose? There was no prewarning to this happening.

Thanks

Strange one, sounds like maybe a vacuum hose may have dropped off? check all connections around the injector pump and turbo... Have you done any water crossings? Keep us posted as to how you go with the dealer.

Something is definatly toast... the engine managmanet light has been tripped by some issue, normally letting it sit or disconecting the battery for 10 minutes will reset a "bug" of sorts.

Like Dave said check your hoses etc... also remove your glovebox and double check all your plugs are in secure and not damaged. Also check your battery terminals are tight as I left them loose at one stage and sent the car nuts due to them coming loose whilst idling... sounded like I left a spanner under the hood, then went into limp mode until I reset it and tightened them back up...

Needs a new turbo.

The Variable Geometry acutor bit has a motor to change the angle of the exhaust vanes. Well the motor works but the sensor that gives feedback isn't. Toyota is sending a whole turbo. Should have it back friday.

There was also a Maf sensor code plus a high intake temp code.

Interesting bit of info they told me, toyota is bringing out a new plug in diagnostic computer that can connect to Toyota, allowing them to have the car running ( I guess so tech's can see the actual engine parameters while the engine is running) and they can make changes to the engines parameters in real time. I thought that was nifty.

Thanks for the replies so far

By the way, have had very positive dealings with the dealer, dropped everyting when I chugged in there to do some diagnosis on the car, gave me a call later in the day to let me know what was going on and to ask if I wanted a loan car. Offered me a 2nd hand 06 hilux to drive but knowing better I downgraded to a 92 single cab which i've effctionatly named ' the gutlux'. I won't be as worried getting this one dirty and I'll appreciate mine a lot more once I get it back.

Dealer is Colac Toyota

Ok I have the car back now. BUT

It's very slow

It seems like i'm only getting 1/3 throttle, it's hard to maintain 120 on a flat road, 1000 - 1800rpm on full throttle is ok but after that its all downhill from that. I'm hoping it's learning or something but i've driven about 100km now.

Least the turbo is spinning now!

I have the car back now and it's better than ever. The dealer thinks they have left some dtc's n there after they replaced the turbo which made the computer self protect but not go into a full limp mode. It had a code for maf circuit being low and intake temp high.

The interesting bit is now I have it back it goes a fair bit better. It was interesting before they turbo had a spot at full thottle around 2000rpm where it could be heard spooling down for a few seconds much like some torque manipulation stratagy from the ecu, but that has gone, it pulls quite hard realy. I'm not sure if it's the first turbo being slightly crook ( the mystery sensor) or if it is they program the dealer loaded.

Anyway I'm a happy camper again.

and you know the best part. it only took you 14days to get it completely fixed !.. you're one of the lucky ones..

get the name of the tech that did the work and take your lux where he goes !..

I know that myself, Dave and others have had MUCH more difficulty getting our Engine Management issues resolved.. months and months..

well done! glad its all fixed!

I recently got a fault code on a 6.7L engine. Code P20b9. I didn't know what the code was, but it meant something was wrong. What Is P20B9 code on 6.7 Powerstroke: How To Fix? I read an article which indicated the causes of this code. And I was able to fix it and continue to drive comfortably.
