How long did your OEM battery last?

Postby D4D for ME on Mon, 18 May 2009 5:34 +0000

G'day all, My 07 diesel's battery is very sad. It will be replaced this week with an Orbital yellow top (I know they're dear but simply unbeatable). I was surprised tho that the original would give up so quick, considering I am still running the factory battery in the wife's 03 XR6 turbo. Before you ask it has never been used for deep cycle applications either. Thanks

Guys
diesel donk's will kill a battery way before a petrol motor will, sheer compression of a diesel motor and trying to turn it over ,
D4D For ME cold weather will not help the situation either seeing that your near orange , frosty morns are your biggest enemy

Luck of the draw with batteries sometimes. I picked up a new car once and drove it 600 km and the battery failed overnight. There I was on a Sunday 200 km from the nearest dealer and 100 km from town....

You're right. It has been starting to come in cold lately, and it does get bloody cold here. Try -6deg nights.

If your batt gives up the ghost on a cold morn , pour hot water over it and it should give it enough life to start your car and go get new one
mate it only gets to down to +10 here overnite , you can have the cold weather my friend, anything below +8 bbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
bugger that

Yeah I did know that trick. Have just been leaving it on charge over night at the moment. +8 ya reckon, we have DAYS in winter that don't see the temp over +6! Mind you I come from SA, the driest state on the driest continent on earth, so I've seen heat before too.
Anyone else had battery dramas. I wanna find out if they're generally ok or just sh*t from the factory.

well since we are taling batteries....touch wood mines still kicking since new...what would be a good powerful battery to replace it with when it does go?

would a deep cycle battery be worth replacing the factory battery with?

something else maybe?

You can get good deep cycle batteries now with plenty of CCA for starting. The Optima yellow top is one that was mentioned earlier in this thread. Thumper are another brand that springs to mind. There will be plenty of other brands too.

Would it be possible to use just one of these deep cycle batteries for both engine starting and a winch aswell, instead of going the duel battery setups? anyone?

It's possible but the draw a winch has could shorten a single battery's life. This will also occur on a lead-acid battery as well though. The dual battery does give piece of mind should the main battery go flat through excessive winching etc. It can also be paralleled to lessen the draw on the main battery. I should stress that I'm no expert in these matters though.

MMAAXX
i am running a Sea Master Gold 105 amp/h wet cell , non maintenance , apparently they are deep cycle/cranking and only $ 210 bucks which i thought was reasonable, my auto elec next door recommended it, he did say that (he said) AGM and glass mat are a waste of money unless needed for strange fitment ie fitted on their side for Space requirements

max, replace factory batt with a 750cca batt and run 2nd batt as a deep cycle
I will be running both my batts as 750cca in the patrol, just cos i plan on doing heaps of winching

Very ancient thread but what the hell ...

05 diesel. The original battery (yes, it's definitely the original as I bought the car new and have not changed it) just died. It's been a bit sluggish for the last several months but finally gave up the ghost last week. 9 years out of a battery seems pretty good to me :).
