Spotlights staying on on low beam.

Hello, I've got a 2012 3L hilux in need of a bit of electrical help.

I first noticed the problem when spotlights remain on when flicking from high to low beam. Went to look for the problem and the relay was sticking on. Tried with a brand new relay, still the same problem. Went over the trigger high beam wire with a multimeter and noticed that I was correctly receiving 12v on high beam, however switching to low beam put me on about 5-6v. 5-6v is not enough to engage a typical 12v relay but CAN keep it engaged once I flick high beams off. This 5-6v also dully illuminates my high beam indicator in the dash.

So that's my problem. My high beam wire should be reading 0v when on low beam. Why am I getting 5-6v?

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Will

It is the way the indicator on the dash is wired, it comes on if the headlights are switched on and low beam is not on, it is a pain but it is how some toyotas are, been around for years.

To overcome it you need to run the 85 and 86 relay wires from the parallel pins on the back of the headlight plug, so 2 wires to the original headlight wiring, one of which through the driving switch. This way the relay can only come on when the high beam is on.

most plug in spot light kits put a rectifier in circuit to isolate the the supply so the feed back thru the high beam globe doesn't hold the relay on.

Thanks for your reply, I may try it however this has never been a problem before, spotlights worked flawlessly for 2 years since being installed, never had the high beam dash indicator come up unless on high beams. I can almost nearly swear that when poking around with a multimeter a few years ago, I never saw that the high beam wire was picking up voltage whilst on low beam. I don't want to bandaid the problem, I want to fix it at its source.

Cheers,
Will

Have the same loom from kings with the rectifier. Worked flawlessly for 2 years, until it didn't.

Will.

From memory the dash indicator gets its path to ground through the lo beam filiment of the bulbs so check the bulbs for corrosion around the centre pin.

if you look at the drawing in the link I posted you'll notice the high beam indicator is feed off the low beam.
When You switch back from high to low there is enough back feed thru the high beam element to hold the relay in.

Yeh I did see that, let's ignore the fact that I have spotties as they're not hooked up atm. Let's just focus on my high beam indicator staying on whilst on low beam. Why?

Does it stay on when you disconnect the spotlight relay?
Are you running std headlight globes?

Yes, the spotlights are fully disconnected. Yes I'm running standard headlight globes
