Tail Light Fuse always burning out

Tail Light Fuse always burning out

Postby Skrewdriver on Mon, 01 Mar 2021 4:27 +0000

I have a problem with the Tail Light circuit on my 2012 SR5 always burning out after I use my box trailer.

I connect the box trailer to the car, and it works during the day and I started the car this morning at 4.30am and everything worked OK, but by the time I got to the service station all the tail lights stopped working and the trailer lights don’t work. This happens at random times. I will replace the fuse and it won’t happen again until I use to the trailer the next time in a couple of months, and the fuse will pop again.

I hope I have explained the problem clearly enough.

Trailer wiring is as simple as it gets and is almost always neglected and just patched up cause nobody wants to spend money on something they rarely use.
Just look over the wiring to see if there is any damage.
Open the plug on the trailer and look for loose screws and wires.
Resist the urge to put a heavier fuse in or you will end up with serious damage to the ute.

Also consider some LED lights for the trailer. Many "later" model vehicles use LEDs in the vehicle and so require smaller fuses (from design point through manufacture). Older incandescent bulbs use more current and so will (slow-blow) the lower rated fuses in the newer vehicles.
