Hi all, just wondering if anyone has done the thermo fan conversion to get rid of the mechanical fan? did you use a kit? is it a tricky job?

The viscous fan is fine when serviced. I run it and a thermo fan that is on a separate switch and is also wired to the ac clutch so the fan runs when the compressor comes on.

If electric fans were viable the manufacturers would have fitted them. The engine compartment is so crowded these days a powerful fan is needed even at highway speeds so electric would be running all the time hence losing their energy saving advantages.

If you really want to convert to electric fans then I suggest you look at getting a pair of fans that fit the whole radiator. Either one big one or two smaller ones. Have a fabricator make an aluminium shroud so the fans can pull all air through the radiator. There is more to it but you get the gist.

A simple plug and play electrical kit will work for you. You can get either a 'slide under the hose' type temp sensor or one that has a housing that you cut in between the radiator hose and screw in a temp sensor. This was you can trigger the on/off temps for the fans. Run it through a relay yadda yadda. I know Davis Craig make kits so start looking there.

I have done this in several cars (HJ / VL and even an older Mirage) but the Hilux will stay with the viscous fan.
