Replacement cranking battery

Hi folks, any recommendations for a replacement battery? I followed the issues with AGM but I'm interested in lead acid.

I'M running a optima yellow top model #8037-327
Had no hassels with it.

It says "ultra-light" but no details, how much does it weigh ( Now that I'm almost 70 my rule with bats. is if I can't lift it easily I don't !!! ) ?

Yes that is it.
Been in there for about three years now
It is a deep cycle & starting and yes it is under the bonnet in the stock tray about the same size as the original
I think it is 25 to 27 kg
Starting, winch ,driving light, e-brakes,

well age is just a number but I do feel my age sometimes
My point about redundant is related to some folks here and elsewhere who disregard any knowledge and experience we older ones have gained, since they appear to believe they already know it all. In my case, 58 years of engineering seem to count for nothing and qualifications are unimportant.
I'm reminded of a poster I saw once that said "why not leave home while you still know all there is to know" but nowadays it seems the younger ones aren't even leaving home until they've forgotten all they once apparently knew.

BTW we love Barossa Valley, can't wait to get back there after all the lockdowns and such.

I too use the Optima batteries and probably wouldn't use anything else for the money.
Here is my LS V8 Patrol with a Red top cranking and Blue top aux battery. No problem having them under the bonnet and believe me that car ran hot under the bonnet.


This is my Hilux currently with a Yellow top auxiliary which is mainly only used for the fridge and accessories (CB Radio etc). I rap some heat shielding around it to help with heat, but I didn't have any issues with heat in the Patrol, so it's just as a precaution.

The cranking battery in the Hilux is original when I bought the car in 2017, so it's lasted well but will soon be replaced with a Red top Optima. My understanding was that a Red top was for cranking, Yellow is deep cycle and Blue is the Marine version which is basically a compromise for both cranking and deep cycle.

Yes Red top heave loads starting, winching, d-lights.
Yellow top deep cycle with the capacity to be a starter, winch , under heave load.
Blue top is made to take the pounding of a boat in choppy seas starting and deep cycle making it good for a accessories in a 4x4. And they can be used under the bonnet my lost blue top 7 years before it give up running the 50ltr fridge but still run lights and 2way.

At least you worked in an industry were knowledge is mandatory, in IT anyone can say their are an expert and from my 45 years experience in IT I have found they are all 'Drips under pressure' but great at posting on Fakebook

Give me a heads up before you head down this way, I have designed and perfected what I call a "Tub Transformer", its all about keeping the 4x4 as light as possible all of the time and would really like to have someone with your experience give me some feedback
