GME TX3520X remote face UHF

GME TX3520X remote face UHF

Postby HK1837 on Mon, 17 Dec 2018 6:47 +0000

Just looking at getting one of these to mount the face up where the useless “sunglass” holder is. Has anyone tried using a normal Cat5e or Cat6 lead other than the supplied connection lead if the supplied lead is too short? Just looking at mounting options for the base unit and don’t want to be constrained by the lead length.

I think you'll be fine. I can't speak to GME, but my Icom unit has its cable running to a coupler which the handheld plugs into. Had no issues with that.

I went and looked at one today and the actual lead with the RJ45 plug on the end cannot be changed like the other GME unit, but it should be able to be extended using an RJ45 jack and a short Ethernet patch lead.
The other positive is the face unit will fit perfectly up in the sunglass holder. Just needs two rivets into the plastic to hold the bracket, and a hole big enough to fit the RJ45 plug through. The only unknowns at this stage are how hard it will be to get the cable down past the curtain/pillar airbag and where to put the microphone clip, and where to fit an extension speaker as I'll hide the unit up under the dash somewhere.

Here is the unit for those who like pictures! They are actually discontinued so old stock is cheap, I have seen them for $400 or $470 with a $150 list price GME elevated feed antennae with spring base.

Hmm, my 2006 doesn't have side-airbags so I didn't have a problem running cables down for my dash cam - can't help here.

Microphone clip - I went with a ClicOn mount with the microphone going through a RJ45 Switch Passthrough (Option #1, Option #2). However, my unit is hidden under the centre console (attached to the front-side of the center compartment - hard to explain, should've taken pictures of the install) and the wire snakes past the gear shifters.

I looked at them but they aren’t remote face and the app is of no use to me, it is aimed at off-road. I just want the UHF for long road trips where phone coverage is poor.

I got the XRS and am very happy with it. When you say ‘remote face’ the whole and only face is in the hand piece which is remote from the radio unit.

The difference between the 330 and 370, as far as I could tell, the 370 is din sized and has a speaker built in to the radio part. But I’ve mounted my radio remotely (behind the glove box) so it doesn’t need to have a speaker. And the speaker in the hand piece is so good you don’t need an external speaker.
as for the app, I haven’t mastered it.
The idea is to add scan groups of local bush fire and emergency services (listen only), to help avoid bush fire and burn offs, that sort of stuff.
And did I mention the speaker is so good....

I mounted the unit under the console in front of the transfer case lever, just made up a little bracket. The face sits neatly in the sunglass holder in the roof, was easy to get the cable down to behind the glovebox, just needed a patch lead and RJ45 joiner. I bought a small Jaycar remote speaker and mounted it up behind the glovebox. Lastly a GME magnetic microphone holder stock to the screen behind the mirror, works perfectly.

I wasn’t interested in the unit with the controls in the hand piece, I wanted a face with analogue dials.
