Replacing AC clutch/coil

Replacing AC clutch/coil

Postby jeremyparr on Mon, 30 Jul 2018 12:26 +0000

I have a failed AC clutch coil on my 2KD Hilux. The coil reads open circuit on a meter. Before throwing money at a new compressor, I've ordered a clutch/coil kit for it. Are there any guides on replacing the clutch/coil? The FSM manual only covers replacement of the entire compressor.

I've done it on my 80 series before, but not on the lux. It wasn't terribly difficult. You just need circlip pliers to get the circlips off. Assuming it's similar to the cruiser, the AC compressor will have a "snout" on the front where the clutch and pulley is. Inspect the snout closely for damage. A clutch failure can sometimes cause the pulley to grab onto the snout and cause damage. If the snout is damaged, you pretty much need a new compressor.

But apart from that, it's just a matter of pulling the old one off, and fitting the new one.
