Hi,
Finally looking to getting this Head Unit installed and need a bit of help.

GPS and Lead - Once I remove the old Head Unit, am I able to push this between the dash and windscreen somehow, so I can have it sitting centre of windscreen. Whats the best way to do this?

USB Connections - No sure how to mount these properly? Do I cut the ends off and attach to an aftermaket usb plug that fits fits into spare slots next to cigarette lighter? Or is there a better way?

I installed this unit in my Lux a few months back. I regards to the GPS antenna I just double sided taped it to the underside of the dash in the Centre pretty much directly behind and above the head unit, easy as.

With the USB leads, I used my mini dremel and cut a rectangular slot in two of the blank dash switch fill ins and used araldyte glue from behind to hold the plug ends in place sitting flush with the front side of the blanks, worked a treat and looks factory as! I would not cut the existing leads, no need to.

It is very easy to damage the windscreen by pushing from the inside.

Cheers SSL.

Thanks for the help. GPS under dashboard great idea. I thought I had to have on top of dash..saved me a lot of pain.

That’s a damn good idea with USB. I wasn’t keen on cutting the Original USB. Mate can ya show some pics of USB lead setup ?

Just as I got my tools ready I thought of a few things I want to do at the same time so I have put the Head Unit install off for the moment.

When I pull the old one out I want to setup these things while I am at it.

1. Switch for Reverse camera so I can run it while driving.
2. Power the Head Unit from my AUX battery.

I've never done any auto electrical or any electrical for that matter and need to do some research.

I wouldn't worry about powering the head unit from your auxiliary battery. They don't draw much power and it's so much easier to buy the ISO connectors and make it a "plug and play" job. My head unit runs off the start battery but my amp, speakers and subwoofer all run off the auxiliary. This set up makes it so much easier to wire up, especially when you have limited experience. With the reverse camera, I now wish I wired it up with a switch on the dash so it could be powered on without putting the car in reverse. Wouldn't use it very often, but would be nice to have.

This was my first attempt. A little rough around the edges, the second one came out much cleaner.

Thanks SSL, appreciated. That is the way to go, looks good. What did you do with the Grey USB? I was thinking Glove Box maybe?

Hutchyman80 - I just thinking if its not to hard and I have it all apart I might as well run power to head unit from AUX, piece of mind I guess, sometimes we will want to run the Head Unit for an extended period.Do I waste time on it is the question..

I found a diagram of how to do the reverse camera switch which looks straight forward enough.

I read somewhere if you can earth Reverse camera wire which joins to reverse lights. This means you manually have to turn it on and off. But that doesn't bother me, flick the switch, put in reverse.

Decisions decisions.....

We live remote Australia so no Auto Elec around to help otherwise I would book it in :) ... and I guess it is something good to learn.

I installed this unit a few months ago, this YouTube link is what I followed. Only thing is I will probably reposition the mic to the steering column as per the manual as sometimes people can not hear me clearly. Also since I have a 09 lux it did not come out with usb ports i bought this plug in the ebay link. Still have to install it though.

Finally got the unit installed on the weekend. All good except the Radio, no reception.

I am guessing I must have missed something somewhere. Thought I had checked everything....

Still trying to work out how to put a switch for the reverse camera though.

Does the reversing camera work when in reverse, or not at all?

Hi Clyde, I haven't plugged it in to a power source yet. I guess I should put it in the rev fuse to at least test it.

I don't really need it to go "on" in reverse. Trying to work out how to have an on/off switch. So I can check the trailer while moving and stuggling to work it out.

I think carbon car systems have a switch etc that joins in and makes camera work off switch. Worth a look.

Have installed the DDX918WS myself.

The below link is for the DDX917WS (it's exactly the same) and shows everything you'll need to know.

Thanks Cscully. Can you watch your rear camera while driving ? Just wondering if I even need a switch.

Turns out I needed an antenna adapter to get radio. Carbon car systems sent me one at no charge. Great service.

Gonna wire camera in this weekend.

Cheers Dazza. Gonna try it stock then throw a switch in the carbon car systems one looks good and easy.

I ran my USB cable for the apple lightning cable up the inside of the trans tunnel cover and into the glove box. The cable now lives in there, out of sight and for everything else there's carplay

Had the unit in for a week and loving it. Well worth the Dollars upgrading the Headset and Speakers.

The feature set of the unit is awesome, they have thought of everything.

Being able to adjust reverse guides is so damn cool.

Running Focals with it, the sound is superb. Going to add some sound deadening to the doors and cab now.

Maybe an amp :)

Got an iphone so I need to plug in to Black USB for Air Play, destroyed a console blank trying to do what SoobyLima did and gave up, tucked black usb Lead into side of steering wheel with Iphone cord coming into console so far its ok.

Toyota fitting USB Extension. This makes it a lot easier to have Airplay USB connector in Switch panel.
