Replacing Side Light Bulbs

Replacing Side Light Bulbs

Postby ipdialup on Tue, 15 Aug 2017 2:41 +0000

Hi all,

Posted here for advice before and it's always been helpful, only spend a few weeks a year with my Hilux, but for the life of me I'm stumped on how to change the side light bulbs, which are blown.

The car is a 2012 mk7 from South Africa. 2.5 75Kw, 5 spd.

Their is a small hole on the inner wing through which you can get your hand onto the connector for the side light however no matter how much I wiggle them the holders won't budge, the holder go into the bottom of the light fitting, underneath the indicator and aren't part of the main headlight lense, I don't have enough space to grip the holders well and have limited movement and leverage to twist or pull them.

Is there some well kept secret on how to get these out I've looked at getting at them from underneath but that looks like a wheel off and remove the wing liner, which is a good chunk of hassle I've also looked at removing the whole headlight unit to get at them which looks like a remove the grill and bumper option.

Is there an easier way to do this or do I just have to bite the bullet and start to pull the front of the car apart!!

Thanks for any advice.

If you can reach the wires, you should be able to reach the lamp itself? Press the plastic clip/tab at each end, and the whole lamp should pop out from 1 end, then you remove completely, and wire and lamp comes away from car about 150mm, allowing easy fix.

Does on my 07

Hmmm,

I don't think you have the same light fittings as the 2012 model, I don't have the side repeaters, I'm taking about the side light bulb under the indicator in the main headlight unit.

I've added a picture of the type of head light I have which I'm trying to change the side light

Think I might have to just start taking things off the front of the car until I can get at it !

I think you will have to remove the inner wing to get to the rear of the head unit.
Try starting with the front inner side, maybe total removement isnt necessary.

My Gregory's says you should remove the battery to improve access to both LHS turn signal and parking bulbs (and suggests removing the air cleaner housing on RHS too).

Ok,

Will give that a try, can see why the previous owner of the car decided not to replace them when they blew!

Something as simple as swapping a bulb shouldn't be this hard!

Just an update, after following the advice to remove the air cleaner and battery, I was finally able to get the lamp holders out seems you twist and pull them, however due to limited access with the battery / air filter in place I just couldn't get enough grip on them to twist them...

Thanks for the advice !!
