Aircon stops working at 130kph

Aircon stops working at 130kph

Postby Unluckyalf on Thu, 11 Dec 2008 4:37 +0000

Any ideas on what could cause my Aircon to stop working when im driving at around 130kph?

Its fine below that speed. I hit 130 and after a minute or so, the nice cold air changes to warm humid air. The aircon light is still lit on the aircon button and everything else appears normal. If i slow to 115-120 for a few minutes then normal service is resumed!

Im worndering if its related to my playing in the mud on the weekend as i hadnt really noticed it before then. However, its been a few weeks since i last went out of town.

Its a bit strange... but my 100 series cruiser did a similar thing at high speeds.

Any information would be appreciated so that i can determine whether i try to put the car into Toyota for a warranty job, or my regular service centre for something i have potentially buggered up!

I think it cuts out due to engine load... I could be wrong though...

It could be that it is over charged and the auto cut out switch is activating due to the high pressure of high speed.
Mine blows cold air all the way up to 168kph. The fastest it been.
It could be over gased?

Not sure to be honest. I have had the Hilux since May and its always been fine... and ive been past 130 on several occasions. Its just in the last couple of days i have noticed it.
It definitely appears to be some kind of cutout. I have a feeling that Toyota wont road test it as the nearest 130kph limit is 'outside their roadtest area'. Had the same excuse when i reported a rattling when im faster than 110.
If its an engine load then then i wont whats changed recently to increase engine load. Perhaps an alternator issue?

Unlucyalf check your condenser to see it isn't partly blocking with debris. That can show up it's slightly over charged as Skog07 pointed out but only happens when blocked

Edit, we have trouble with buildup of fine crap between the cond. and radiator on excavators which is near impossible to see and shuts down aircon
My wife say's I am not completely useless, I can serve as a bad example for others

Ill have a look at the thanks Tasibrett.

Spoke to a Toyota guy today and he suggested checking the radiator to see if there was mud/dirt on it. Would make sense though as i was playing in a lot of mud on the weekend!

Didnt look to be honest! Though it didnt feel unusually high.. or low.

I hosed over the radiator area this afternoon and quite a bit of dust/mud came out. Im due for another run on Tuesday so ill see how it goes..

However, the rooftent will be off this time so there will be less load on the engine anyway.

i was told that the 100 series abtually had it wired into them to shut down air con over 120kph, because Toyota thought it would be too much load at that speed.

Maybe they wired that into the Luxes too, although prob not since people are quoting it to still work at high speeds.

The hiluxes dont have that cause before the removed the open speed limit in the territory i was travelling to qld doing 170km/h and i done it for about 1000km all up and i didnt have a problem with my aircon. I would be tipping it is probably a condenser.

My 100 series used to do it at around 150

All seems to be fine now that i cleaned all the mud out of the radiator/condenser area :)
