LED H4 Conversion

Might be just another "Internet Rumour" but have read that some or all replacement H7 LED's can put strain on your eyes and can make you tired while driving at night. The rumour goes that compared to dedicated factory Led headlights the LED replacement H7's some or all cannot operate at a high enough frequency to prevent eye strain.

LEDs operate on a frequency and switch on and off very fast so your eyes cannot see it, however the more expensive stuff like factory LEDs headlights operate at a very high frequency so they cannot even be detected switching on and off via a slow motion camera. From what I understand small Led bulbs like the ones used in tail lights or brake lights operate at around 30hz and with a slow motion camera they flicker a lot and this is what can make you very tired driving at night if they were in your headlights.

Anyway might be worth getting your phone and slow motion video your LED headlights and seeing if this is happening.

Haven't experienced any eye strain with mine, and I do a lot of night driving, but from memory they had quite a high refresh rate (threw the box out, so can't check).

That said, it might be because I use a halogen globe in my actual H3 high beam with a low kelvin count (2700k) which takes the edge off the intense blueish colour of the low beam and driving lights (both 6000k), it probably also counters any flicker.

So I ended up grabbing a set of the H4 JW Speaker LED's and faced a little problem once I installed them.

While the headlights work brilliantly with the ignition off, as soon as I turn ignition ON the headlights stay on highbeam and when you turn them back OFF the headlights remain ON, but very dull.

I'm guessing this has something to do with negative switching? Are there any quick fixes? Thanks.

Anyone have any solutions for me before I take them back and go back to the old halogens?

I assume you have a pre 15 model being a h4? In which case you posted in the wrong section maybe. I have ultra vision h4 in mine and they are awesome.

JW Speaker H4 LED dramas

Postby Magnum06 on Wed, 28 Jun 2017 12:08 +0000

Hey fellas, I posted this in another section but got no response

I'm having trouble with the LED headlight globes I bought. I put them in and everything works fine when the car is off, but as soon as I turn the key to ignition I lose low beam and high beam stays on.

I know N70's and most other Toyotas have negative switching headlights which might have something to do with it. I have spoken to a few people over the phone and they reckon having an LED lightbar or spotties can stuff around with aftermarket LED/ HID globes.

I'm just needing some info on how to get them working properly. Cheers.

I've had to retro fit speaker lights into a couple of machines and they were positively switched and required a relay and a new ground to flip the signal

If your car has auto headlights they're positive switched. I know that doesn't solve all your issues but it's a start.

Yeah thanks man. Stuffed if I know whats goin on. I spoke to JW Speaker today and they said pretty much what rory18 mentioned. Relays. It surely can't be this hard just to run some fancy headlight globes.

Dunno what theu did in their wiring kits but I've done a few h4 kits now of different brands amd they all work fine. Do yours have fans? I refuse to fit those in 4x4s cos the fans just dont seem to handle the crap.

Not sure mate. JW Speaker also said any driving lights interferes with them as well. Something about backfeeding through the highbeam circuit. I bought a set of Phillips Whitevisions in the meantime until I figure out how to to fix whatever it is.

Just a little update. Had a play around today. I disconnected the foglights and lightbar to see of there were any backfeed issues and it made no change.

I disconnected one headlight and connected a halogen in its place and sure enough the headlights work perfectly with the 1 LED and 1 halogen.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this tells me that the LED's aren't drawing enough current for the circuit to work properly hence, i'll need a set of load resistors?

I know it’s been a while since you posted this, but was wondering they’re H4 yeah?
I’m wanting to change mine from Halogen globes to LED, I’ve currently got the factory headlights.

Not sure about yours, but mine are very bright on low beam and not much brighter on high beam.
Is this normal ?
