reverse cam and switch

reverse cam and switch

Postby devilstower on Sun, 11 Sep 2016 3:01 +0000

Hi,

Been reading up and down on doing an override switch for the reverse cam, but cant seem to wrap my head around it.
The car is an 2012 facelift hilux.

My plan was to run an switch, then a relay to trigger the cam.
I have found this red & white wire under the steering that gets positive when in reverse, but dont know if thats a common wire for the reverse lights and the camera.

If this has been explained before, please just direct me in right direction, have searched up and down on this but still a little blank

Be sure to isolate the original feed from the new feed if in an auto or it will confuse the ecm and throw a code if turned on when in drive.

Its not an auto, so I should be fine.

Anybody knows what wire behind the HU that triggers the screen?

Use the search function, there is a detailed thread in there.

How did you go? I am also doing this? Reverse cam with override switch through relay as not to trigger reverse lights when override switched. Ive sussed out the wiring diagram just not sure where to find the reverse switch wire in the cabin as i dont want to run it all the way from the light itself.

Sorry, havent gotten around doing it yet. I did find the red/white that can trigger the relay, but never got around to find the trigger input on the head unit.

How did you test it if you don't mind. New to all of this. did you test it live with voltages or dead through continuity? All I need to find is the wire that switches the back up lights.
Lucky enough to have the wires labeled at the back of the new head unit for the trigger wire

Just test it live, when putting the car in & out of reverse. :)

hey mate, i had heard that the red white wire you find sometimes doesnt have enough voltage to power the camera. I was advised to look behind the glove box, there is a yellow wire there which activates when in reverse. I tapped into that to trigger the feed when in reverse and can comfirm it works. Override switch is in and it all works well!

So can anyone shed some light on which wire on the back of the HU to triggers the camera?
I've got a SR5 with factory reverse camera, but want to put a switch in to be able to use it off-road without having it in reverse gear.

Are you using the yellow wire as 12v to trigger the HU, or applying 12v to it ?

Okay so I found the trigger wire to the HU, it's on the biggest connector, red with yellow stripe. Wiring the switch in was as easy as puting 12v ACC through a switch to the trigger wire. As a precaution I used a diode to stop the 12v heading down the trigger wire away from the HU.
No dash lights or reverse lights are turned on when I flick the switch. Camera works exactly as it should with no delay.

Can someone please explain how this all works. I'm really wanting to install a switch on my 14 model sr5 with the factory camera.
cheers
