I had mine fixed for free by Toyota, years after the warranty had expired.

Can anyone confirm whether they had 1 error code or 2 when they needed to change the clockspring?

Just thought I'd update - I replaced my clockspring and the airbag light is now gone

So it would seem that a faulty clockspring can also give you an error code for the passenger airbag circuit as well.

The more you know :D

Wierd, my airbag light just came on thismorning for no apparent reason. Haven't hit anything or had it submerged.

Update, I had the clock spring replaced yesterday under warranty and the code cleared. I got in there first thing and had my car back in less than two hours. The bloke said they were copping the repair on cars up to 7 years old and/or 200,000 kays. I scraped it in under the 7 years by a few months ;)

Yep, dealer said it was the squib (clock spring). They reckon they tried to put it through as a warranty, as they seem to be a recognized fault. They said Toyota will cover vehicles up to 6 years(?) or up to 200000km.

Toyota denied the claim :(

They wanted $630 to fix it. :|
They reckon labour time 1hr.

So then.....
I sourced genuine part $385. Got my mechanic mate to fit it. He took about 20 minutes, 1/2 of this time though was spent looking for tools as he left his set in his other car. So much for Toyota needing an hour!
I'm 100% sure....I think

Just got off the phone from Toyota. My vehicle has done 170k and build date of May 06. My light has come on with the clock spring issue, Toyota will only cover up to 200k and 7 years, my vehicle is 7 years and 16 days and they will not cover it. Darwin Toyota want 540 for the part and a hour to fit it at 155 an hour. Not happy at all!
That aint livin!!

Unlucky, you can buy a cheap clock spring (sqib) off eBay for around $80. The genuine one has gold coated terminals for the airbag unit. The non genuine has just normal nickel coated terminals.

yes

Just do what most others did and buy one off ebay and put it in. Should only take 1/2 hour and only cost $80-$100 (mine was $120 6 months ago)

Dont waste you time with Toyota trying to get it fixed for free... more trouble than its worth. I walked into the service departement and said that my clock spring had broken and if there was a possiblitly that it would be fixed out of warranty. The bloke asked how i could possibly know that it was the clock spring and I would have to book it in to ($75) for them to tell me what was wrong.... and only then I would have to take my case to Toyota Australia in order for them to consider an out of warranty repair.... then I might get a refund of the cost off booking it in In order for them to tell me that the clock spring was broken. I told the guy ill fix it myself and walked out..... First and last time ive been near a Toyota dealer in 2 years

Hmm just to counter this. If the car is below 200,000km and I think 7yrs of age, it's pretty straight forward.

I drove into Toyota City Northbridge (WA), they took one look at it and said they'd diagnose for free (they were 90% sure it was the squib sensor/clockspring) ... 15 minutes later it was diagnosed, call was placed with TA and approval was granted. 90 minutes later I got my car back fixed.

Not a cent. Out of warranty.

Just sayin...

Some dealers are obviously more helpful than others.... like any shop/chain/ franchise

For me it was way easier to just buy a new clock spring and fit it myself rather than chase up emails, phone calls, organise a time to drop off my car, etc

Mine was 6 years old and less than 100 000kms

if you can get it done for free... go for it.... but I could see that I would have to play hardball with the dealer and personally I had better things to do over $100

Yeah for sure, first mob I rang wanted a diag fee and umm and err. I just rand elsewhere and got lucky.

I didn't fancy pulling the steering wheel apart if I didn't have to and don't like messing with air bags! Hehe

Seen a friend set off 12 air bags in a Beamer taking his seat out. Stupid yes but all the same I don't like it!

Ps make sure you ring dealers first. Socially engineer them.
