AirBag lights are on!

AirBag lights are on!

Postby Billy Bob on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 5:37 +0000

The problem is my air bag light has been on for a week. i've asked Toyota what it meant and they said that the airbags wont deploy if i have an accident, they told me to bring it in and they will hook it up to the computer to find what the prob is, my mechanic serviced my lux today so he hooked up his computer and found out it is a squib circuit :? what the hell is that my mechanic doesnt know but doing some research so i thought i would put it to you guys, have you heard about this before and if so how do you fix it?

i could be wrong. but i think the squib circuit is the connection between the steering wheel and the column. i think some people call them clock-springs. consider it a firing pin if you will

have you been through some really deep water lately, or had your truck submerged under water for a while?
reason i ask is that it is a common problem for the air bag light to come on as the water gets into the electrics
it has happened to a few members here
Glenn

due to recent financial difficulties, the light at the end of the tunnel has been shut off until further notice !

No i hav'nt been through water but i had a mate disconnect my key beeper by taking off the steering wheel cover, but when i think about it the light didnt come on until two days later. he also disconnected the seat belt beeper by going through a routine on the odometer, im pretty sure the light came on when i hit a pot hole reasonably hard, now im :?

The squib is the very small firing device that is triggered by passing a preset amount of electrical current through it. The squib & electrical firing circuit is tested for continuity at each engine start up. If the circuit becomes "open" the warning light is illuminated.
It sounds as if your mate might have accidently disturbed a connection & when you hit the big bump the connection dislodged which brought the warning light on. Because the circuit is "open" the airbag can't deploy.

I dont think that removing the key beeper would have done it....Id like more info on this "bump" yopu had with a pole.

My guess, and its just a guess at this stage is depending on how hard you bumped this pole, you may have affected the wiring to the airbag sensor that is on the front of the vehicle either side of the radiator.

was this the area that hit?

Is light is on, yeah the airbag wont deploy, but if the wiring's messed up somehow, the last thing you want is an accidental deployemnt when your doing 100kays on the freeway.......Id get it checked asap.....not worth the potential danger of it.

Mmaaxx, i think you misread Billy Bob's post. He says he hit a pot-hole, not a pole.

I think we can conclude, Billy Bob, that this may not be something you can fix. Remember that the airbag is an explosive device pointed at your face. And, if your mechanic is correct in saying it's a faulty squib (or "firing pin") I know I certainly wouldn't want to be playing around with it.

To me faulty could have 2 results.
1. Won't operate when it is needed, i.e- crash with no airbag deployed.
2. Will operate when not wanted, i.e- crank engine and suddenly your nose is broken, or as mmaaxx said deployment at 100km/h for no reason.

Squib fault code normally means the air bag spiral/clock spring is faulty...i have changed a few so far....does your horn work?

Yer i just changed my spiral cable yesterday the 1 wire that feeds the squib would go open circuit when the steering wheel was straight, this was becasue the ribbon cabble in the (clock spring/ Sprial cable mech) was at it tightest bend... if you get wat i mean, i just changed mine out $80 instead ov the 500 to 600 toyota want.

billy,

must have been a big pot hole, I skidded up into the back of another car no damage to my ute but a few days later the airbag light came howeva no air bag was deployed i got it all fixed and it only takes 10 mins to reset the sensors didnt cost a cent as accident wasnt my fault luckily.

I had the same problem in my single cab workmate a couple of weeks ago, that I got to Toyota to fix during the regular 90K service. They said it was the clock spring, and it cost me $500 from memory. They told me the chance was, if it was left un-repaired, the airbag could blow out at anytime.....

Mine was recently replaced around the 75K mark... the mechanic reckons that dust gets into some of the earlier models and they simply replace with a new updated cable. Was under warranty so all good....

Thought a thread revival might be better than starting a new topic

I have the airbag light on, very rarely is it on instantly when I start the ute but nearly always on by a few hundred meters down the road.

Popped into Toyota to have them read the code only, as doing a full diagnosis was going to sting me $120 and I was hedging my bets on it just being the clockspring

I got the following codes
B1801 (normally related to clockspring)
b1806 - apparently passenger side airbag as well

Has anyone else got both of these codes before and found what the problem was? I've read through a Hilux repair manual which lists the only common thing between these 2 codes as being either the Center Airbag sensor assembly, or the instrument panel wire.

Trying to get an idea of what to look at here as either proper diagnosis or replacement parts are expensive and if there's someone with similar experience it would help greatly

I really have no idea when it comes to auto electrics, but it sounds like you could have a possible short.

If something was gone in the centre airbag assembly, i'm sure the light would stay on all the time, and even where you to disconnect the battery for 1hr to reset the code, i'm assuming it would come back on the very second you started it if it was a major problem.

Throwing ideas out there for you mate.

Yeah it's strange because the light isn't on when I start the car every time, it only comes on after a few seconds driving, sometimes as long as several minutes
If it was a major fault I'm certain it would be on permanently. The service manual says it detects a short of at least 2 seconds on one of the circuits, so I'm suspecting a wiring problem.

As many could attest, there are many wires even in a single cab Hilux, so anyone's previous experience might give me a good place to start looking

Sounds like clock spring

Had mine replaced under good will gesture. First dealer tried to sting me diagnosis fee told them to shove it. Then went to city Toyota who did all the diag for free (I mean shit how hard is it to read a code). And did the fix also for free
