Factory Cruise Control for SR D4D Auto

G'day All,

Not particularly technically minded but I spoke to my local Toyota Service people about this about 6mths ago and they said that all the parts you would need to buy to fit it (wiring, switches etc) would amount to around $2000 thru Toyota.

They said to go after market.

Cheers,

Watto

I have the command unit fitted to my 08 SR D4D manual and mine has the controls mounted on the steering wheel (RHS behind airbag) and i'm rapt in it. You can adjust its sensitivity through the settings as it was a bit slow to engage/react but now when i hit the button (set or resume) its right on it. I also did fark's mod of putting the led into the dash cluster so it lights up the factory cruise light so it looks factory.
Cheers.

Watto - I can only comment on my '07 D4D, I priced up the switch at $300 - THAT IS ALL YOU NEED.

Fark and quinny.....

have you guys actually gone out, brought and fitted the cruise control switch to your own lux's?
Or are you agreeing that the switch is all that is required to make it work?

OK, I have been playing this week to see what will work on my vehicle. Mine is a Manual 08 model & there may be some differences with the Auto, as on some manual toyota vehicles the cruise may need a brake switch installed (if anyone has an SR5 manual, can you confirm this?)

Anyway, I purchased a generic Toyota cruise switch from overseas as follows:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... MEWNX%3AIT

I know these will fit alot of Toyota vehicles, including the Hilux, Cruise, Corolla, Tundra etc.

After removing the air bag & steering wheel I have found the following:
- the mounting holes are already there ready to go
- a cut out needs to be done of the rear of the steering wheel shroud, but its already marked.
- the plug is already there for the switch.

However, on my vehicle I found the nothing activated when the switch was turned on. This could be due to the brake switch which on the instructions, is required for some models. I know other members with auto's have played with the connections & have managed to get the "cruise" light to come on.

So, who has an Auto & wants to do some experimenting? I have the instructions & switch if someone with an auto wants to spend some time playing.

To plug the switch in, its just a matter of undoing the airbag (not removing it), & then the cruise lead can be fed in behind the steering wheel & plugged in (without mounting it). This should be enough to go for a drive & try it out.

Let me know who wants to try it!

Cheers

Tony. I'd love to know how you get on. Unfortunately I have an '07 SR manual so probably can't help out with much info but I can encourage you to continue with your quest. It honestly should be possible as it is all controlled through the ECM. The ECM knows road speed, throttle position and engine load. These are the only real parameters needed.
Are there blank plugs near the brake and clutch pedals?? Don't forget that manuals may also need a clutch switch, which could simply have a jumper wire fitted on the autos. I'd immagine that they all use a common wiring harness. Please post any results that you find on here.
Cheers, Nick

Yes I agreed its possible, but you should see the various instructions that I have.

they basically start off by fitting & connecting the unit & see the the cruise light on the dash works. From there do a road test & check that everything works ok. So far pretty simple.

If it doesn't work, then there are different instructions to suit different models & they involve checking the pin connections on the different control modules (I think there are 2 from memory) & looking for certain blank pins. Once you have found the correct ones you reconnect/change as per the instructions.

The problem is that there are quite a few Toyota models listed, but not the Hilux. I couldn't find any that were similar to the Hilux just to make it harder.

I think it will need to be done by someone who has a good knowledge to the Hilux Electrical system to work this out. I'm happy to send you the instructions & switch if your keen to have a crack!

Yeah righto Tony. Gimme a call on the number that I've PM'd you and I'll have a look at it. It's giving me the shits now so I gotta do something about it, but paying a thousand odd dollars for an aftermarket kit seems very exorbitant.

Tony I'm not sure what models you have details on, but I think the Hiace is the best to use if it doesnt have the hilux or vigo.

Being playing with the "cruise" system today, & have been studying the cruise wiring diagrams. I ended up locating the correct plug on the ECU & direct wired the cruise switch.

Went for a road test....nothing....dead as a door nail. Rechecked everything & still nothing. Ended up using a multimeter to check the ECU pin & couldn't detect any voltage at this pin. As the cruise switch is basically just an earth for this pin, there should be power at this pin when the ignition is turned on.

My only thoughts are that the ECU is not programmed for the cruise. Does anyone have a contact at Toyota to confirm this. Maybe there is a different program for the SR5 models which have the cruise?

give that a crack and maybe factory cruise will be available for all hahah

Hey guys,

Has there been any movement on this at all?? I am also keen to fit the factory stalk and factory clutch switch to my 06 SR Manual.

Does anyone with factory cruise have a couple of pictures which they could post which show the clutch swtich location, and how the stalk is incorporated into the steering wheel?

Cheers,

Ben
