Factory Cruise Control for SR D4D Auto

Factory Cruise Control for SR D4D Auto

Postby fark on Mon, 29 Sep 2008 1:52 +0000

Righto, it seems that my vehicle '07 D4D auto will support factory cruise control just by adding the steering wheel stalk switch - yippee. If you ask Toyota, they say no.

I have aftermarket Autron, which works OK, but not as nice as the factory cruise in the SR5. Put it this way, I will sell the Autron and buy the factory switch from Toyota once I confirm that it will all plug in and work. The factory switch is nicer to use etc.

Now, I have only checked this by locating what I thought was the factory cruise control wire behind the airbag. I know how these things usually work, so I put a GND on the wire and the CRUISE dash light came on - half way there. I then went a drove the vehicle and switched a 750ohm resistor between the wire and GND which SET the cruise and I was off - stiffy.

Price for switch from Toyota is $300.
Price of aftermarket cruise is approx $750 - maybe more if dealer fitted at the time of sale.

Perhaps a member can actually get hold of a switch out of an SR5 and plug it into the SR D4D auto and see if all the functions work - I am very confident that it will. **Don't blaze away here, be careful with the Airbag and do not disconnect the wiring from it - if you're not sure what you are doing then leave it be.**

Next would be to see if somebody has access to good pricing from Toyota to see if these switches can be bought at a reasonable price.

Hi guys, notice you are talking about SR-auto,I have march 08 D4D manual,SR5,Dual cab only 5 months before release of standard cruise control, may be everything is already there except for the ($300)control switch, dont know if it would fit the steering wheel,no blank to remove,if had to replace steering wheel it would be far too expensive, anyone know anything, about doing this mod.CHEERS :?

Hi sam just had a thought,I believe the switches are at least $300.00 If there were 4 people interested in this experiment & we pooled resources to buy a switch it would be less than $80.00 each, more people then even cheaper,I am about 1200 km from you ,so a drive over is out of the question but could be interested in something like supporting your Idea ,can't see anyone would be interested in pulling the switch out of a brand new truck. If the Idea worked for you then you pay out the other members who chipped in & keep the switch. If the idea fails due to requireing much more pieces than just the switch, like not able to cut out steering wheel,or just far too complicated then what do we do with the useless switch? May be someone could add to this with better alternatives.(like said at the start just a thought but may be impractable) CHEERS ;)

Silly suggestion;

Take to dealership (next service maybe),
Ask them for a written quote to fit factory cruise (make up a reason, eg: for purchase authorisation in your company),
If its a simple $300 stalk then the quote should come to about that much plus a bit extra for labour etc.

No money spent, questions answered.

Fark,
You can't bodge me up a wiring diagram of how you think the wiring works?
I can go buy some buttons & switches and make up a bodge setup to test the full function of it, and I think if that all worked fine, it would be okay for me to go and shell out ~$300 for the Yota switch assy.
I read somewhere that we may need a double pole brake pedal switch also, but I can work that out, it may already be fitted as standard, I haven't looked yet.
Let me know,
Sam.

Hi sam my D4D MANUAL SR5 is 03/08 build for what its worth,I just crawled under my dash to have a look at the brake pedal switch you were talking about, it is a white switch with 4 wires terminating into it,I would have thought as it is only operating the brake lights it may only be using 2 wires, the other 2 may be spare for what you are talking about(dual pole), may be someone with factory cruise on the aug/sept D4D SR5 manual may be able to have a look at their switch and see how many wires are terminated into it & what colour the switch is to see if it's a completely different switch.CHEERS :)

The two extra wires are to do with the drive by wire go pedal.

It is to do with the fail safe circuit that checks the excellerator components for any malfunctions.

The cruise control only has two wires, an earth and a signal wire to the ECU.

The cruise control relies on different resistive values to alter the signal from the switch to the ECU.

You also have to enable the ECU to accept the input.

ditto...any progress gents???
I've come from a long line of cars with cruise and now to a 2008 SR5 D4D manual with no cruise!
Any tips on removing the air bag on the steering wheel to check out the wiring behind it?

Guys...this thread seems to have stalled.

I'm still keen to find out if this will work.

If someone has factory cruise fitted, then all we really need is the wiring diagram for the connector & switches. Then we can make up a dummy unit with the 3 switches to try on a vehicle. This will be a cheap way of confirming if it will work before we go out & spend $300 on the factory switch.

Well I've tried and there aren't any connections running back to the Engine management...not that I could see or trace anyway. I've checked a wiring diagram with cruise against my July 2008 SR5 D4D Manual and there are no connections running out from the pin locations for the Cruise Switch input.
I'm going to get an Autron unit...

I've got an Autron Auscruise on my 06 SR D4D manual. Never had an issue. Can't help with wiring/installation as it was already in when I bought the lux
