Starter Motor Crunching

Starter Motor Crunching

Postby wykd636 on Wed, 08 Oct 2014 2:48 +0000

Hey guys..

First of all, I have used the search ;)

The topics I found on the Starter motors weren't kind of what I was after.. They seem to be talking about the car just not turning over.. but haven't mentioned what happens to mine.

First up, main things to note:
- hilux d4d 2006 dual cab
- Brand new batteries (both main and aux.) (a few months old)
- i have a work van, so this car doesn't get driven super often, but atleast 30 minutes each night (to goto gym) and an hour or two here and there over the weekend if i go for a surf/4wding.
- serviced regularly
- NO, i haven't flooded it

Basically happened one day (maybe 2 months ago) - notibly after I got the new batteries installed (because the last one died, and my aux. needed to be upgraded)

Went to start the car, and a big KCHHHRRRRRRRRRR sound, backed the key off.. went to go again, started fine.

Next day, went to hop in, car started perfectly..

A few days later, KCHRRRR sound again, a little longer this time, probably for about 5 seconds, backed the key off, started again.

A few days later, car started perfectly.

Basically - each time i hop in the car, its different, sometimes itll fire up perfectly, others itll "misfire" and then start.. the other day it made that awful sound around 3 times..

I'm guessing a dodgy starter? maybe a tooth in it has snapped off? or could it be something to do with the batteries (as although they are brand new.. it only started happening after i got them put in.. )

OR - should i just do what the other thread says? open it up and see if theres any shit in it?

Sorry for the shit punctuation & grammar (nobody got time for that), and thanks in advance

Cheers!

mine did the same thing about 3 yrs back. they (Toyota)said something about a buggered clutch in the starter. they replaced it on an out of warrantee claim. cost me a fortune!! my best suggestion is to pm bansheebuzz on this forum he can supply changeover unit aust. wide at very reasonable price

Odds are it is the starter but as mentioned it could be ring gear damage, every time the starter pinion strikes the ring gear it will be in one of two places, if it has damage in one of those two places it is hit and miss.

best thing is to remove the starter and have a look at the ring gear, or feel.

The starter pinion should turn with a reasonable amount of clutch resistance smoothly with the fingers one way and lock up in the other direction.

Then pull the starter apart and look for signs of things sticking and not feeling smooth.

Also as mentioned if you suspect starter don't look for the cheapest you can fine on ebay, get bansheebuzz of another sparkie you feel comfortable with to rebuild the original.

Deffinately starter motor ring gear - and deffinately dont get one made in china! Its a pricks of a spot to get to so do it once and get a oem or equivalent part.

http://shop.allfourx4.com.au/epages/sho ... 8100-0L030

Found this website to have quite a few parts for the hilux, very handy! ill be buying this starter motor in a week or so.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but our lux is doing the crunch when starting now.
Was your issue ring gear or starter itself?
