Clicking noise from behind climate control

Clicking noise from behind climate control

Postby SC162 on Tue, 03 Jun 2014 3:11 +0000

At the end of last year I bought a new SR5 and it has developed a clicking noise from somewhere behind the climate control buttons. Sounds like an electrical switch turning on and off. I found this topic on here viewtopic.php?f=11&t=20618 which I thought was going to be the same problem, but mine seems to only do it for the first 5 minutes after starting up in the morning, and from what I remember has only started doing it since it started getting cold. It doesn't do it in the afternoon, and it also does it regardless of whether the climate control system is on or off, as the fans were completely off this morning and still made the clicking.
It had it's first service last week and they said they never heard anything, and that I could leave it there overnight for them to test it in the morning, but that's not really an option atm.
Just wondering if this is a normal thing with the climate control, or with the hilux? My old 05' SR without climate control never made the noise.

Thanks

Do you have your idle up button on? Or temp set at 25 and out side air temp under 15 deg. As there are 2 relays and a electric 12v heater element in the air box that helps heat the cold air quicker. Before the hot water comes into play. Relays are In The location you are describing. Works very well and only on a sr5 model.

Thanks for the reply. Idle up button? Is that the rapid heat down near the gear stick? If so no I don't, pressed it once to see what it does then turned it off, been meaning to find out what it does. I normally have temp set at 27, and outside temp when it occurs has normally been 10-16 deg i think. Would it still do it even with the fans off, so really the unit shouldn't be working?

It does a servo self check every start. This will also cause some noise. The rapid heat button idles the engine up when not moving and sends the egr gas through the cooler section of the unit full time to heat the radiator water quicker. As well as turn the electric Heater element in inside the air box.

Mine does the same, only in the mornings and only just started doing it this week as the weather got a little colder. And as mentioned does it with everything turned off. I could not work it out last winter, just got used to it and stopped as soon as the weather warmed up...
about 5 min would be right, I drive only a couple of blocks before it stops. When it gets really cold you will hear it clicking faster. at the moment its about 3-4 seconds apart and gets to 1-2 seconds when really cold.
You will get used to it. ;)

I had a similar relay clicking noise start about a month ago in my 2013 sr D/Cab and has not stopped since. Clicking noise is coming from behind the glove box area and is happening whenever i am driving. Went to dealer to see if i could buy a workshop manual to do some troubleshooting before its next service, and for a lazy $585.00 i can get one. I think i will see what there service technician finds. Anyone know where you can get an illustrated parts book or wiring diagrams for the 2013 hilux?

Mine does this and it's an SR not SR5. Only on cold mornings when I turn the heater on before engine has any temp to it. It does it regardless if the pwr heat button is on or not

Does anyone know of any other relays in the same location that can start to click?
I have developed a few inconsistent clicking noices in this same area and it's not the A/C

I just bought a new 2015 sr5 and my climate control clicks roughly every 10 seconds only when the system is turned on. I live in Darwin and have it set at 24.5 degrees so given the climate here, it would be always cooling. Is this normal? Toyota checked it out on first service and say no issue but the endless clicking is really annoying!

Just some info on what I found with mine.. Clicking noise on start up and also when I changed the mode/ air flow on climate control. pulled dash out and found the big whit cog /gear was rubbing on the wire harness next to it, cable tied the harness away from it and all fixed.

So has this fixed the problem for everyone? I have the same annoying click in my 2010 SR without the climate control, under the same conditions. I previously pulled the dash off for another reason but didn't notice any abnormalities. Maybe I have created one  mine sounds exactly like a relay

Don't worry about it, it goes away when the weather warms up, anything over 15degs and it doesn't make the noise behind the glovebox/climate controls. Don't know about the speedo one as I havn't got that happening

same here on a new Hilux 2015.
I'm not worried though can be virtually any relay.
I've got the feeling it's airco related (never tested it) and I think i see a relation with engine RPM.

Just an idea:
- electrical heater / cooler (or some other component) is only active with some RPM's in order not to drain to much power. That would explain why i usually notice clicks when slowing down or standing in front of a traffic light and rarely at constant cruising speeds.

I have a 2009 SR Hilux....no climate control.
I'm picking up this thread because I found out a couple of years ago that the clicking sound that was annoying me came from 2 relay units located behind the glove box (at about 1.00 o'clock). The clicking noise only occurred when I turned on the heater in winter while the engine was still cold. Once it warmed up, the clicking stopped. All's well......until this week.
Outside, it's 40 degrees and I turn on the a/c and the heater relays start clicking!!! WTF?
I've got the glove box out, so I know it's these relays making the noise...
Never done it before. Why would the electric heater kick in when I haven't touched the heater control, and only want cold air from the a/c?
Can someone let me know if I've got this all wrong?
