So to that end, what models do I need to look for that will bolt in as a direct swap?

Cheers

If you can find an Eclipse AVN726EA they go straight in and even have inbuilt steering wheel control decoder. You may still be able to buy the plug and play patch harness. Mine has free maps for life, but if a pain to update but it can easily be done.

I am looking for an OEM unit that will bolt in. Will see how that goes first. The Eclipse seem to be none around although look ok

There should be plenty out there, mine was fitted new in 2011 as the dealer fitted Satnav. I had one fitted to my 2010 an it stayed in it when it was written off too, so there must be some out there.

Too right, just need to keep an eye out. Any models to look out for (head unit models?)

Picked up a second hand unit (00535), mic doesn't work and GPS mapping is way out of date. The USB is finicky too.

Things I did like about the Toyota Nav unit is the screen will shut off completely :D

So after a bit of stuffing around I bought the mic patch upgrade but have decided to go back to the Kenwood for now.

Will sus out what unit will fit exactly and work as I need.

Cheers

Why are you wanting to stick to sourcing a newer OEM model? Would be plenty of aftermarket units available that are a straight swap, I've got a Sony in my 2006 and it was a bit narrower but my local country Repco had little plastic bits that filled the gap perfectly and looks completely normal? was definitely one adapter (which they had) that i needed to add, possibly 2, it was 4 or 5 years ago now so i cant remember. Aftermarket ones are pretty reasonably priced? :)

The current Kenwood unit I have has too much bloatware on it, doesn't work with my my Android phone (Android Auto), not all steering wheel controls work as per OEM and most importantly, the screen cannot be shut off. I do lots of night driving and the reflection on the windscreen is BS

Is there a unit that will do what I need?

No issues with the 2019 Kenwood 919WS unit here - all works a treat with Android Auto as well as Apple Carplay and sounds awesome with the stock SR5 6 spks. Steering wheel buttons all perfect and configurable if you want to change them from OEM.

Wouldn't find a better aftermarket unit for $$ and this era of Hilux.

For $1000 when I purchased my 917WS to the same price tag for a newer model, does the screen completely black out on yours? or does it have residual light bleed light mine does (as shown)? As the screen does not fully shut off, I have the light reflecting on the windscreen and I do a lot of night driving so this reflection shits me no end. Yeah, put a cover over it....

Does the 919 have mute setting via the OEM stereo button? On the SR, push and hold MODE. The 917 will not recognize the setting for it so I have to hold volume down. Something else that I am like, whyyyyy it no work?????

Yeah yeah, I know... first world problems but if a shity stock standard base model OEM unit can do it, you would expect paying $1000 for an aftermarket head unit do the easy stuff right?

I would either or both, contact seller for a response, or contact Kenwood aust. There may be an known issue with the unit, and they might swap it out.

Yeah you can black it out completely pretty sure - you can configure a mute but it will use one of your buttons up - the angle of the dash is not great in this model - the angling function of the head unit is of no use at all!

I have tried to darken the unit but will not turn off completely. Kenwood have not replied to an email I sent asking if it's possible to turn off (instead of dim).

As you said, the angle function is useless and the actual angle of the unit in the dash was not designed properly and was hoping there was another way of adding a dual function to assigned button but shit out of luck on that one!

For now, chucked a rag over the head unit

I ended up making a cover from the black plastic back of an A4 notebook, I cut out a section the size of the unit, with about 2cm lip on the top, folded that over and put a stick-on velcro dot to attach it to the top of the unit, just in front of the clock. When I'm not using the cover, I just stick it down next to the passenger seat, simple but effective.

OK guys... So you need 2 harnesses from Toyota

Pzq60-00141
Pzq60-00161

One is for steering wheel control and the other is an adapter to suit older models
