Heater Control Switch Cable

Hi

Not exactly an electrical problem but it's the most relevant section I think.

My heater control switch became very hard to turn so I pulled the center of the dash out to have a look and noticed that the mechanical wire that is pulled by turning the heater control switch has broken just behind the switch and needs replacing.

Just wondering if anyone has done this before and if so, how did you remove the wire at the bottom where it turns the plastic gear to control the heat?

I can see where it goes but as it is hard to reach/see and don't want to go in monkey fisted and break something else as the wire itself is going to cost over $50 from Toyota.

Grab the toyota item and you will be all sweet.
Very easy to replace.
Dust kills them.

Will take u like 60 min total.

Might have to give this a try, mine was broken when I bought the hilux second hand & has been stuck on defrost ever since
I assume the whole dash has to come apart to get at it?

Mine's not the heater control one , rather the fresh/recirculate switch that seems stuck on fresh How hard is that one to do boxhead?

infinitley wise and a meercat to. Could this get any better Back to my stuck switch ... Worked fine (ute is only 12 months old) until auto elec pulled things apart to wire up switches and stuff

For future reference:

55909-26080 is for the temperature control switch (right switch on dash).

55906-26060 is for the switch that controls what vents the air come out of (left switch on dash).

Mine and my old man's utes dials are bloody stiff, both the temperature dial and vent selection. Am I able to fix without replacing the cable, or is not worth trying to get away with original cable? Just sounds like a bugger of a job putting 2 new cables in each Ute :/

Spot on Boxhead, my recirc/fresh slider was jammed and I wondered where the hell these occasional pieces of soft black rubber were coming from on the passenger side floor . Removed the glovebox and a large piece was blocking the recirc/fresh flapper. removed that plus a few other loose pieces leaving the foam type backing.

Both my Fresh/Recirc and the Vent selection were jammed.

Pulled Glove box out, and sure enough a big piece of Firewall insulation was jamming the fresh/recirc. Fixed.

Vent Selection - It is stuck on floor and head. Couldn't see anything jamming it, it will slightly turn either way. Making it hard in these cold mornings to clear windscreen.

Any ideas or most likely the cable?

Timm, I finally got around to replacing mine a few days ago, after battling with an almost un-moveable temperature dial, and a vent selection dial that you had to reach up into the footwell to change!

Cost me $92 for the two of them, and is the mechanism behind the dial in the dash, the cable and the gear/sprocket down in the footwell all in one. I couldn't follow the path the original ones took as it was too tight, so had to cut the old ones cable to remove them. I went down towards the bottom of the steering wheel, and used a long screwdriver from up top, and removed the panel that covers the internal fuses, and wriggled it through a gap.

In the footwell, remember the direction/orientation of the old one when putting the replacements in as there is a little plastic bit poking out that means they have a set spot they have to sit, and after 2 or 3 minutes of frustration realised I was trying to install the temperature dial on the vent selection! When doing the temperature dial I found that the dial would get to halfway between hot and cold and go not further, and that's because there's a tooth on that gearing that is different to the others and I was one tooth out so it kept getting jammed, which was obviously an easy fix! Wished I had done it ages ago as it honestly feels as if the dials are broken they are that easy to move!!!

Be very carefull and do not force the vent selection or it may end up being a bigger job. Mine was tight and eventually it snapped and went loose and lost all control of floor or window direction.
I ended up finding a clip from the console had dropped down the vent and wedged itself in the flap bit and over time broke the lever bit so without pulling the complete dash and blower system out I dodgied up a manual lever. all seems to work now.

Sorry about late reply.
I used an old mountain bike wheel spoke and drilled a hole in the housing and lever and bent the spoke until it ran smoothly its rough but I was not spending the $ to fix it considering I was quoted $900 just to pull dash out to investigate then the cost of parts.

does anyone know how the spring hanging over the cog spline part goes? the larger plastic cog sits over it. unfortunately it fell off before i could get a chance to take a photo of how it goes back together
