Custom rocker install

No mate, you're on the money, if you want to have the led light up on the switch using the bottom diagram (and the ONLY way, as far as I can work out) is to have a second relay between pin# 3 on the switch and the spotlights, ie
Pin 85 2nd relay -> Wire from pin# 3
Pin 86 2nd Relay -> Earth
Pin 30 2nd relay -> 12v +
Pin 87 2nd Relay - Output to spotlights

Unless anybody else out there has a better idea, when I tidy my wiring under the bonnet in the next few weeks this is how I will be doing it.

Yep, absolutely spot on. This removes the load of the spotties from custom rocker switch. Unless the supplier is guaranteeing the contacts on the custom rocker switch can handle 30A plus switched load which I doubt, you can wire it as per their diagram.

Quick question,

as an LED light bar (20 inch) would probably draw less power than spotties, would the figure 2 (botttom diagram) be suitable for wiring one of those up?

The carling switches are rated to 20A, so for a led lightbar or small spotties you could get away with it, but why risk a $30 switch for the sake of a $5 relay?

After having a read and some tinkering i couldn't figure out how to get the back light of the switch to come on when it was wired as per the first diagram. However it worked properly when wired as per the figure 2 diagram. So if it was suitable i was thinking of doing it that way

Even though figure 2 will work it totally defeats the purpose of the relay, you are putting the total load through the switch. I also worked it out using two relays, the second turning the led on in the switch, dumbest idea ever but it will make the illumination led in the switch work. :?

you could try this
you just need 2 diodes

and you should be fine

That looks a bit neater than the way I was thinking mate, how would be the best way to put the diodes into the circuit? Could you use this sort of thing

Thankyou so much this works perfectly such a neat way of doing it I spent most of this long weekend tidying up my wiring and changing over to my custom rocker switches.

The stock slots require a fair bit of filing if you take out a blank you will see there is a lip inside you have to almost remove that entire lip both sides (top and bottom is fine).

I worked out how to do the rear demister the only way I could see it working was using a second relay so I went to jaycar and got a tiny relay to do the job (there is bugger all load going through it as its just a relay for a relay) Part number if anyone is interested SY4032.
Here's some pics of the finished product.

Aaaahhhhh :(

I have a 2012 SR and had driving lights and IPF spotlights installed by ARB. I saved my money and purchased two Custom Rocker switches to replace the dodgy 'mouse' switches that come with IPFs. I furgured it would be quite simple given that the relays and switches already work but .... no :cry:
I have a dash light positive sorted
Spotlights:
There are three wire off into the IPF switch - one is always positive, one is positive when the lights are off and the other is negative.

Does anyone know how to wire this to the CR switch? I know that I could start from scractch and rewire the lot following the diagrams so helpfully provided but I realy don't have the time to pull everything out and I hope that I don't have to.

If the IPF wiring loom is the same as the Narva (Both have same dodgy mouse switch) then I have bad news I tried that the first time I wired my spotties but unfortunately no matter what I tried I couldn't get their loom to work with any other switch (I tried a couple) although I'm not the most electrically savvy person there is. So the first time I wired it I did the relay reversed which worked for my switches that look like the Toyota ones but the light was backwards (turned off when lights where on).
I suggest you redo it like boxhead described works perfectly shouldn't take to long to do

I had a similar problem with my 2010 Hilux and found a positive feed for the high-beams by going straight into the loom that came out of the indicator stick behind the steering column. Made wiring up the spotlights and wiring the Carling switch pretty easy. It was the wire which turned on the hig-beam indicator on in the dash, from memory it was green and I found it by using a multimeter.

Thanks Martin - I will look for that one. My biggest problem is that I have already paid someone to wire the spotlights and driving lights up and now I am going to have to undo their work (assuming I can find it) and redo the whole thing - it is a hassle that I didn't want (that is why I paid for it in the first place). Oh well.

Well to put your mind at ease, I had the original wiring connected as the negative switch setup and with this you could never get the indication light to come on due to the negative switched setup. When the service diagrams were available on the net (they aren't now) i went in a found that the factory high beam indicator in the dash cluster is activated by a positive feed, take a wire to one side of the top (indicator light) light of the Carling switch and the other to ground and when you turn your high beams on the top light should come on. When you pull the steering column apart, check it all with a multimeter to be sure.

Boxhead, looks like a good way to wire them up. Have you done many this way?

Just wondering what the diodes are for?
Would there ever be a situation where the current would flow in the reverse direction?
