3RD battery questions

Hey Sharp018, i have a similar but basic setup to what you are looking for.

I run a third batter in a battery box with a couple plugs and volt meter built in to the case which i generally use when camping and sit it in the tub. Runs from the second battery with just a 50amp fuse I believe. Ive got the end connection as an anderson plug which is handy so i can connect it to a third battery, solar panels or a couple times I have connected 2 extra(125ah) batteries (totaling 4).
I was told the more batteries i hook up to the 20amp redarc charger the slower it would charge, but i can live with that. If i take have 4 batteries (total) I generally take the solar panels to charge the 2 (125ah) in portable battery boxes. If i just use 3 i let the car do its thing and leave the solar panels at home.

I have found exactly this to be true, if I wire the 3rd batt. in the tub into the cranker (direct) it only takes a few hours to charge.

But if I switch to the 2nd batt. with the redarc between the 1st & 2nd it seems to never get charged as I never drive 'far' enough.

Here is how I can switch between the batteries so easily which has been gr8 for testing

I'm guessing because when the 2nd is charged the redarc cut the charging !!!

Projecta isolators work so that once it drains to much power it will cut out under 12.3 volts this stops the drawin g power of your 2nd battery and for the 3rd to cut out at 12.3v this saves your battery from excessive drain which sometimes cant be recovered or will take a long time to charge

But as the 2nd battery chargers i think to 13.3v it will then charge the 3rd.

And with my setup i have solar pannels, so i can remove the battery and put on solar i tested it yesterday im gettint about 14 to 15v of solar charge direct sun. 2 pannels. My solar charge monitor drops to 12.5v when running an inverter with a fluessent light. So it would be intresteing to see how it would go with a fridge freezer

So the main projecta is only really there is its a cloudy day or even just a day trip somewhere and i want to use back end power for a fridge freezer or other things

That was my theory, but most times i can't be bothered setting up / connecting the solar for the short time the vehicle is stationary at the camp site so just leave the battery plugged into the car, or I just leave the solar at home cuz it takes alot of room on the roof rack

Third battery

Postby KUN26R on Wed, 30 May 2018 6:34 +0000

Morning all, I am trying to work out the best way to increase my battery capacity. I currently have a bcdc charging a deep cycle (100Ah) under the bonnet.
With no room left, I was thinking I could run another battery paralleled from my original deep cycle to under the tray? I have heard that it’s not the best idea to do this, (I think the batteries need to be as close as possible).
There would be approx 2m of cable each way.
Can anyone tell me if this is not a good option or if there is a better way?
I’m not too fussed if it works ok but the life of the battery is reduced just don’t want any problems arise from it.

Cheers Scott.

I think there are a few topics kicking around the forum about this.

Long story short, you need another BC-DC charger up the back as well, because that charger will compensate for the voltage drop.

Hope this helps

That’s what I was thinking, I’m happy to put one in but I was hoping to combine the batteries somehow so I could run 1 supply into my canopy.
I’m not sure if I could combine the both outputs of 2 bcdc?
(I did search for this but my search was in the gen8 section, I’ll read the whole section when I get some time)

Yeah, your problem is that the batteries need to be close together and near to the charger, so it would be that you'd need to move both batteries to the tray with the charger or get a new charger for the tray
